Balance over weight. I played a borrowed bass that almost crippled me because of the neck dive. I had a 5 strong Pulcinella that weighed in at 8 pounds and Spector 5 string that was a hair shy of 8 pounds but didn't balance that great until I put un a strap button extender. I had a Music Man with a Staus graphite neck that weighed about 9 pounds but was like sonic ex-lax. The low end could clear a bowl obstruction in no time flat.

Just weighed all my basses

I use a digital scale sold as a postal scale that I bought a few years ago at an Office Depot store. I agree that balancing on the strap is essential to comfort. My Dingwalls range from 7lbs, 4oz (four-string Super P) to 8lbs, 11oz (four-string Super J/P). My five strings both have chambered swamp ash bodies. One is 8lbs, 4oz, the other is 8lbs, 9oz. I don't play super-long sets, but I still have a strong preference for light basses.
