Kala UBass Megathread, Part 2

I'm sorry that the two of you did not receive responses yet.
If I was down with a broken tuner, I would be hoping for a very rapid response.

I tried to help facilitate this in the background. I did have e-mail correspondence with the chiefs directly, and I do believe you will get help very soon.

In the meantime, I want to post this here for the future. When people need support, maybe a phone call might turn into a faster first step than e-mail. I see they Do post their numbers at the website:

Please keep us posted on your progress. Thanks.

I assume they're pretty busy people. Frank, thanks for your help and support in all this. Without TalkBass I wouldn't have a UBA (u-Bass Anonymous) support group!

I'm just hoping this won't happen to any of the other tuners. I see Road Toad Music has the original issued U-bass tuners by Hipshot in stock. Being that I see my U-bass as indispensable, id consider upgrading them in the future.

They should never be so busy that they cannot respond to current customer concerns. If negative posts about the U-Bass begin entering the Google search results, it could kill a potential sale.

Hi UBass users--Please contact [email protected] for help with your UBass. We are happy to assist you if there is an issue. Thanks-Mike Upton

Thanks for joining Mike. I'm guessing you're too busy for the constant back-and-forth of TalkBass, but I sent a second e-mail to the e-mail address provided with some of my concerns.

Second e-mail sent and responded to... I will have a replacement tuner in the mail soon. Some issues need to be hashed out yet behind the scenes. I'll update as I see fit.

I have been comparing and contrasting the Behringer ADI21 with the Fishman BII at home, but to give the Fishman a fair shake, I am going to use it as my preamp this coming Saturday at Shabbat service. An hour of playing in a live setting with the big room PA should tell me more.

The U-Bass fits the music at the synagogue more than my Gretsch. The upright-like sound compliments the music very well. My pedal board is way over-kill for that music, anywho. I am still going to look into a compressor to act as a limiter and possibly add a touch more sustain.

Was contacted by Kala CS, and two new tuners (I wanted another as a backup) are on their way.

Interesting that the CS guy was telling me to make sure the top end screws are tight, but allow the bottom end connector to be snug but not overtight. I may not be describing it right, but he mentioned that sometimes the U-basses come out of the factory with the opposite, with floppy top screws and too-tight bottom screws.

Something for us all to check on our instruments, I suppose.

Hello everyone! :-)
I'm a bit curiuos to these instruments, and not having time (and patience) to wade through the entire MegaThread (I apologize beforehand) I will ask a question that may have already been answered.

I am considering getting a Sub, but I am thinking the transition from 34" (which will be my main instrument still) is big... therefore thinking fretted is ok. My question is simply, how big tonal difference is there between a fretted and a fretless SUB/Ubass? The fretted seems (on youtube) to be sounding quite uprightish already, and I cannot really make up my mind whether the added confusion of no frets is worth the sound difference. :)

Also, how big difference is there between the California and the SUB?
Thanks :)

Fear not, go fretless the first time. You will find the conversion to short-scale to be easy. After a few days of practicing it, you will never want to touch frets ever again.

But, then, I am biased. :)

I am big fan of finger vibrato and sliding into and out of notes when it artistically appropriate. The fretless allows this. Yes, you will have to practice to get your fingers down to the short fret spacing. But, once you've adjusted, you may find your hand getting less tired as it doesn't have to work so hard.

hehe Well, nothing wrong with being biased. :)
So the fretless vibe shines through on the U-bass, too then?

I can't speak from experience since I only have a fretted.
But some have reported that the fretless does Not really produce the typical fretless MWAH.

Yet, I'm still very interested in the fretless for a variety of reasons.
If you can, you should probably test drive all of them.

Can you or anyone else explain this more? I'm not following.

Hey everyone, I just picked up a UBass2 fretted spruce top (with truss rod) and a little Roland Micro Bass cube to play it through - when I'm not pumping it through my accugrooves :)

Sor far this thing rocks! the fit and finish was surprisingly good after some of the comments that I have read. Only the back hatch leaves a bit to be desired. My strings only had about 2 wraps on each and didn't need restringing, and the whole thing wasn't even grossly out of tune - ok - not playable, but mostly ballpark.

This is going to be fun!!

Just subbed. I'm enjoying playing uke with my friends and planning to buy a UBass to learn how to play the bass. I have two questions.

1. Acoustic UBass without amp will work with uke ensenble in terms of volume? If not, what benefit I can have with acoustic one over solid body?

2. Someone in UkuleleUnderground forum said he plays his UBass with Fishman Loudbox Mini, which is an acoustic guitar amp, and it sounds great. Many people say non-bass amp will break soon with a bass guitar. Can I use Fishman Loudbox mini for UBass?
