I asked on the Ortega FaceBook page:

Your site isn't clear whether the RLizard contrabass ukulele has a partially or fully laminated Dao body. Please tell!

The reply was:

Ortega Guitars: Hi...the Lizard Uke Bass is laminated but the laminate covers a thinner solid shift of Malaysia mahogany...the Paldao wood would be to heavy for a solid use...hope that helps.

Google Francis Deck or PM Fdeck on here. I think he makes batches but he usually gets them out in a reasonable time. Best $240 I have spent. Because I have 3...a series 2, a series 3, and a specially made unit for direct installation in my solid body custom that I'm having made. That should be done soon...

Oh, and +1 on the Radial PZ-Pre. It has a great form factor, and is one of the better sounding preamps I have tried with this instrument. I just want more control over the low frequency filter, so I sold mine and always have a F-Deck and the special Red Dragon.

A lot of people have asked about including more and more features. He wants to keep it simple and small, and not have a plethora of options on there. That all said, it does what it does so well that I will gladly pay the low cost and use it in conjunction with other units. But for the few things it does, I have yet to find better.

Besides the variable filter, the Baggs para-DI does the other things and has phantom and a great EQ. It sounds great too! It would be a close second as far as sound IMO. But I still like the variable filter and small size.

F-deck. A crude site, but his product is extremely good and reasonable. I posted this morning my opinion about series 2 vs series 3 on the fdeck thread. It's mostly about how you intend to use it. If you are going to put it on a pedal board and use it for your electrics and turn up to volume a lot, or if you play through SWR, Mesa, or other bottom heavy amps, series 3 is for you. If you are more upright, ubass, lower volume, or want to attach it to your upright tailpiece or ubass strap, series 2 has more gain and has a slightly warmer dynamic character.

It is so slight and can only be heard by months of A/B testing, but to my ears there is a different ideal in different situations. I have one of each. And I have the guts of a series 2 about to be installed directly into my custom ubass.

I bought a fender-style disc type retainer and planned to use it farther up on the headstock to only hold A and D. The rest really don't need it. But instead of modifying it I sold it and funded a custom. Make sure if you do that the barrel part is tall enough to allow enough clearance of those thick strings!

I like the one-man company approach, only he will not sell out of North america.
