Kala UBass Megathread, Part 6

FYI, I asked mimmo about the red strings in the short bass thread.

well. I am aranging the new envelopes for the U bass Reds. They are not the same that are uised on the shortbass one. They bare different in the elasthomer blend and in the copper powder quantity & final gauges. a true new product.
The strings are already done: the envelope is the final job. On the U bass it help with more volume ( powerful), more sustain and a very very good bass response.
Please let me work on them 20 days again.

Yeah, I wasn't happy with the Silver Rumblers after experimenting with ways to get rid of the horrible finger noise and squeaks. I went back to the Paehoehoes, which are decent. My only complaint with those strings are the E string is a bit floppy so any fast playing can be a bit tough, and they need to be tuned up a bit more than the SR's. I'm anxious to try the red strings and see what happens. Hope you feel better soon Mimmo!

Glad that strings are improved. I think we will end up with a synthetic surface over a steel core for the best combination of pitch stability and easy fretability.

Another option would be flatwound steel strings, but as I see it that would take better frets than what we see on the current acoustic UBasses.

Is this too many wraps around my G string post? It's probably at 3 wraps with some space to go.

For the initial stringing process, I string and restring till I have only one wrap around the post by the time it's stable. I'm about 2 months in and I have almost 2 wraps. Hopefully the much anticipated red strings will be thundergut stable and pahoehoe awesome.

Problem is, when I pull the G string up and I have a good length of string past the post, I correctly do the knot as prescribed in Kala's video but the string still slips after around 10 minutes!!! So I keep ending up with the same amount of wraps. Anyone have this issue and how could I solve this?

I have a quick question I hope someone will answer...

I just received a SUB in Black from Zzounds. It plays awesome but I was somewhat disappointed in the paint job. Every single picture I saw and even youtube videos the Bass appeared to be Matte but I received an extremely glossy one. Is this normal? Are they all glossy and the pics/vids just make it appear matte? I know it's petty but I prefer a matte finish on all of my instruments.

I never had a problem with the D or G string slipping. It took me a couple tries to get it right, but once I figured it out I haven't had a problem.Just double check you are doing it right, and if you are maybe you have a bad tuner or someone else may have a solution. Good luck Soong!

I'm pretty sure the first run was satin/matte and the newer ones are glossy.

Kala has been terrible about providing details and changes to retailers or end users and we are left to figure them out after we buy things and are surprised. I have talked to Kala about this several times and it falls on deaf ears. Bottom line is they don't really care about things we care about. Just buy it...reminds me of the business mentality of American car companies up to the last decade.

Retailers know nothing about the ubass. They hang on the wall with the ukes and forget about it. The Sam Ash gnomes don't know what to do with it. And it's with the ukes when it should clearly be with the basses. I'd bet money that if Kala explained to stores what the ubass is and how it needs to be maintained, and if they sold it with basses, it would be huge. As it is now, a tiny percentage of bassists know what it is.
I've seen this on every ubass I've seen in a retail store in NY.

Apparently Kala's own YouTube channel. Could be from their studio, where they test prototypes.

I have 7 acoustic instruments with preamps and/or equalizers (from 3 different makers). All have the electronics mounted on the sides or at the end.

I see problems with having them mounted on the soundboards.

Soundboards and bracing should be dimensioned purely from acoustic reasons. Stability for mounting electronics should not be part of that equation. As I get it the thickness of the sides is the least important acoustic parameter in the body (if not unreasonably thick).

I note the Rumbler has its preamp tuner placed differently from the other acoustic models.
