Kala UBass Megathread, Part 7

After playing the Hadean for a week, I am really liking it. I will probably mess around with the saddle when I eventually change strings, but, the high action seems like less and less of an issue the longer I play it. Any suggestions for a good, cheap, gig bag? Thanks

The Cordoba gig bag is great, I think it was about $30 on amazon. Very thick padding. It only has one strap, but I added backpack straps to mine.

Thanks.
Considering that I still don't know how much I'll play an instrument like this except for when I'm on vacation (which is the reason I started looking for a ubass), I'd probably go for a cheaper model to start this "journey".
Maybe I'll fall in love with the unique tone of these instruments, maybe not. I wouldn't necessarely go for the cheapest option, though. I'm still trying to get an idea of the differences between models.
The Rumbler seems the most popular, I don't know why.
It was Kala's first "economy" model. Funny thing was I actually liked it more than the other Kala's they had in the shop.

Had fun playing the kala ubass today, but experience a lot of finger noise on the strings that came with the ubass. Is there a way to adjuat the eq to take out the noise or should i change strings? If i can get rid of the noise, i will take it on gigs.

Which strings were on it? The new low priced kala basses look like they come with thunderguts (white strings), which I've always found to get much more finger noise than the pahoehoe strings (black strings).

Can anyone recommend some decent combos to use with these little Uke basses? I'm currently using a Fender Rumble 100v2 which is ok but I'm wondering if something a bit cleaner or more suitable for double bass would be better. I've read that double bass players rate 8" and 10" speakers and Gallien Krueger, MarkBass and Phil Jones are popular combos.

Any tips and advice appreciated.

Part of what upright players look for is dual inputs with a mic channel and high impedance pickup channel to handle a non-preamp’d piezo. None of which you need for a Uke that has a built in preamp. I get great tone through a 1x10 combo, no tweet. Some will insist that you need a full range cabinet but I haven’t found that to be true.

I suggest you A/B some amps against your Rumble; my guess is that you already have a great sounding Uke amp...

Probably not going to keep up with your hard hitting metal drummer though. :D

Just received a new 2018 ebony roundwound Kala ubass. Its everything I was hoping it would be, EXCEPT there is a huge imbalance in the volume of the D & G strings (much louder, hotter), compared to the E and A. I get the same volume discrepancy if I thump on the body near the bridge at the G string (loud), versus the same at the E string (much softer.)

I got a good price from an Amazon marketplace seller, but no exchange available. Would love to hear any ideas. I tried "loosening all of the strings, rocking the bridge backward, pressing down" as I found on an earlier reply to this thread, but didn't change anything.

Ideas? I don't want to send this back, love the cosmetics, build quality otherwise,

Contact Kala customer service. They will tell you to do what you have already done (rock the bridge). Explain that you've already done that and it didn't help, and that based on your experience with piezo's (or what some dude on TB told you), you think the problem is with the piezo bridge itself can they send you a new one please. Took me a few tries but eventually got a new bridge / pickup assembly from them and it was much better.
FWIW, I find the LaBella Silverbacks to have a more even sound then the pahoehoe that I had on there before (my E was a bit softer even after replacing the pickup). YMMV...
