Really it's the volume control that I missed and am happy to have. The eq doesn't hurt either. The tuner is a bit of a convenience.

Have had both. Passive is fine
Sometimes it is just easier to adjust at guitar. But then you gotta worry about batteries. It is just a style choice.
I had a kala sub with a string nut issue. Kalas first fix before looking at bass was sending a new a string. No more issues

The Journeyman uses cr2032 button lithium batteries. Let's see how long they last. Theoretically longer than alkaline. I will try and remember to update the thread with that info.
I have an older Exotic Mahogany with no pre-amp and it puts out more volume than the Rumbler I had. My amp has a built in pre-amp, so it all works great. I had a pre-amp that was made for upright bass, but I don't think it made that much difference.
It's not so much about how much volume as it is being able to control volume without having to rely on amp. I used to use an external pre-amp like you mentioned and enjoyed being able to cut vol and treble as needed.
All my basses, guitars etc. have Vol/Tone so I figured why not the u-Bass? Now I have it. I am happy!

I hesitated at first to respond to this post, but I decided to say something... I wish people would stop being so damn stupid and turn their G-D smartphones sideways when they shoot videos, the picture will be 3 times larger and fit all the computers and TVs. There is absolutely no reason to ever shoot video upright, to think that the only time someone will watch it is on a phone is also stupid. (Sorry but I just can't stand such short-sightedness, especially when it's so obvious that they can't fit everyone in the frame.)

Yea, that's the only part that stinks. But it's a new year, lets find worse things to get mad at!
NUBD...got a smokin' deal off of ebay on this Kala SUB with local pickup, no shipping charges! I've had 2 of the A/E Ubasses, started out with a Rumbler, then got my Exotic Mahogany, which I love, but this solid body really has more deep tone and crispness.
Any advice for re-stringing with Kala round wounds? They're a lot different than the Pahoehoes. I've read in various places to cut 2" and 4"-5" past the tuner post, then stick the end down in the hole in the tuner. I put them on by just wrapping around, but have 6" of excess and afraid to cut off too much!

Saw your post on UU, I'll answer here too. I've done that with flat wound strings, but I cut only the threaded part about 4", not the wound part, I think you should be able to cut any part of the Kala strings and not worry that they will unwind. I make sure I leave enough to get about 4 winds around the spool, one thing to consider are the fatter spools, so be sure you leave enough.
So, what I did was wrapped 4 wraps, left another inch or so of string and cut it off there. I bent a "J" in the end with about a 3/4" overlap and stuck that "J" end into the hole in the center of the tuner. Then wound it all up and it seems to be working fine. It still has a nice mellow sound, I was thinking it would have a more metallic sound, but they are nylon core with silver windings. Look kind of cool with the all black, I'd prefer the sunburst SUB, but this was a great deal. It will work for what I wanted (something different) my electric/acoustic with Pahoehoes will still be my main player.
Downside is, there's more fret noise, probably from my sloppy playing, maybe practicing with this will make me a better player?! ;-D

Can you adjust the action on the solid body Kalas to feel more like an electric bass? I bought a set of roundwounds for my acoustic Ubass and the only thing I don’t like is that the action cannot be lowered at the bridge, and the roundwounds sit too high off of the fretboard. I know the solid body bridge is adjustable. I’m just wondering if the action can be set fairly low with the roundwounds.
I think those silver roundwounds look absolutely great on that black SUB, by the way.
