Not sure how many people Skip has working for him but it's probably not many. And their bread-and-butter is not strings - but that's not an excuse for poor service. Still, when considering the project management triangle, what is important to me most is quality - which I probably won't get fast or cheap. Skip's strings last me an incredibly long time and sound great to me, which makes them the best choice in all areas: tone, longevity, and cost (over time). So, when I need to purchase them, I do so not needing them the next day. If I need a set now I go to Guitar Center.
Given that I had placed my most recent order this past weekend, I gave them a few days to get it shipped. Not seeing any tracking in my email I called Kalium. Guess who picked up? Skip did. He took responsibility for the delay and said I should see tracking by the end of the week. I'm fine with that - and was ecstatic I got to talk to Skip himself.
He was very friendly and willing to chat about anything - as he has been in the past - and shared with me some new speakers he's creating. I'm quite sure he would have spent more time on the phone with me but I had to drop for another call. His passion for what he does in evident and he reassured me he'll be doing this for years down the road. I asked that if he decides to retire to let me know so I can place a big, lifetime string order from him.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to restringing my Conklin and wish I could sample a Quake or one of his other basses some day. We're on opposite coasts but would love to meet and see his shop.
