Bassist Diagnosed With Throat Cancer (AP, 05/21/2004 7:57 PM) Soul Asylum has postponed recording while longtime bassist Karl Mueller is treated for throat cancer, the group's manager said Friday. Mueller, 40, is home from a short hospital stay, manager Jake Walesch said. A tumor was discovered after Mueller woke up and was unable to breathe, he said. Walesch said Mueller, a co-founder of the Minneapolis-based band, is doing well. Soul Asylum put off recording its 10th studio album until July, when Mueller will be finished with treatment. Soul Asylum, which was formed in 1981 as Loud Fast Rules, is known for the 1992 hit single "Runaway Train."
