Well last night we had a KILLER gig at an outdoor bar, and it definitely made my night. They had told us (a 3pc. blues/psych rock band) that we were guaranteed at least $150. Well we packed the place entirely full and were called on for an encore, but we still only got $150 because there was no cover fee. So I left, pleased with the show, but a little bummed that we didn't get paid for such a good show. Well while I was playing a couple of my neighbors showed up with some friends of theirs, and my mom was talking to them all. I guess that my neighbors brother just opened up a new restaurant 30 minutes away and is looking for someone to play acoustic guitar at the restaurant on thursday and friday nights. He was amazed at how good I was and that I am so young (16), and asked if I played acoustic guitar. And ironically I play acoustic guitar and a ukulele. Im giving him a call this week, and I can finally be playing music I like aside from loud blues all the time, and its just me so I can choose what goes. ps. I'll be making tips, and will be getting free dinners there
If the club owner says you are going to make "at least" 150, That means you are "only" going to make 150.
[club owner dictionary] at least = at most sure = maybe catering = 3$ buy-out free drinks = 5$ bar voucher always = never place to sleep = place to park your van "at least" .... anyway, cool story
Haha this is very nicely done. I think if it hasn't already been done, then we should start a "club owner dictionary" on the Band Management forum. I have to ammend one... free drinks = $5 bar voucher or free drinks = 2 drink tickets for the cheapest beer in the bar and also "we'll promote" = we might put up a flyer on the day of the show or we might spell your band's name incorrectly on our myspace page
Cool on your new gig. At some restaurants, free dinners are the shizzle. I remember some regular gigs at BBQ joints and Greek restaurants where the dinners were pretty memorable. More than that, playing a different kind of music that you really (also) enjoy is excellent. Nice going! PS - out here in the Santa Cruz area there's a hoppin' Ukelele scene.
Club ownerese. I'll Advertize. = Call all your friends. I'll give you a raise next time if I can afford it. = I will never give you a raise. I didn't make any money. = I'm making a killing off of you.
good stuff man, and excellent gig pick up...can't wait to get home so I can start gigging...its been soooo long
