Double Bass Kay C1 history

I have an old Kay C-1 and was hoping to find out a little about its history. The Serial number is 3951. All I've been able to establish is that it was made between 1938 and 39. I got if from a friend who's dad played it for as long as she can remember. He passed a few years back and knew I'd give it a good home.

How do I go about finding records on it. He may be the original owner, for all I know.
