I adjusted my pickup a little higher and when I put my thumb on it the pick up goes down, kind of loose. feels like sponge under it maybe. what do you use for more stability?and if it is springs where do you get them?

... if you've got a Fender then it IS sponge under the pups. You don't say how old your Bass is but after a few years the foam perishes and needs replacing. The foam in a Mouse mat has about the right "sponginess" for the task.
For many many years I've used old mouse pads - I simply cut to size, then layer as needed - the pickup is screwed down tightly to the proper height, and NEVER moves. The key is too adjust it tightly so that there is sufficient "fight" from the mousepad.
Nice thing is the density of the pad means it doesn't really get squashed over time - set it and forget it.
12+ years later still set perfectly.

The other option that I have used on occasion is a piece of old air tool hose. I find the piece or air line is springy enough to accomadate even the highest set pickups.

I'm one of those guys who uses surgical tubing. It's fairly cheap, available at many home improvement warehouse type stores and stays flexible/springy for years.
