Every bass design makes a difference in tone. Everything from the wood used to the body itself. I know that Ken smith makes both great basses and his electronics are just as great. Since you'd be having an on board eq I know it opens up a lot of tone options. Some basses are better sounding with just the smallest eq while others like it when you turn up certain ranges like the lows and mid for instance. With the Ken smith you can't really go wrong. It's really just a matter of if you're happy with the pre you have now. If I had a bass I wanted to mod or just replace the pre I'd definitely be happy with a Smith pre amp to stick in there. You were asking opinions and I say hell, go for it. If you don't like it you can go back to what was in it. You'll probably like it though. I like the tones of the Ken Smith basses. I've wanted one for a while. Good luck. I hope you get that bass how you like it!

You can certainly go to the trouble and effort of removing the OBP3 and installing the Smith.

But it may not turn out to be an improvement to your ears.

In my opinion I think you should contact ether Ken Smith directly or a Tech to make sure the Smith preamp is compatible with the pickups your using in your bass. Aguilar makes their pickups and preamps to run kinda standard with other electronics but Ken Smith designs his stuff to run with his pickups no saying his preamp wont match with your pickups you are using but before you purchase it do some research t make sure his PA will run with the pickup you are using before you waste your money. A lot of the high end luthiers don't design their electronics to cross with others IE Ken Smith vrs Alembic. Im not a tech or claim to be one but the only pickup / preamp companies I know that makes their stuff sort of standard to run with others is EMG Aguilar Nordstrand and Bartolini. There are probably others too but I would question Ken Smith because he is very particular about his products. Hope this is helpful for you.
