Kern IP777 Preamp User Manual

Thx for the info. I was just looking for info on what the flat eq setting is and whether the master outs are balanced or not (I've been told unbalanced, but wanted to double-check). Waiting for proper cables before I fire it up - can't wait. DM

Very simple yet awesome preamp...No manual needed; if you don't get a great tone within 60 seconds of plugging in...something is wrong. Hit me up if you decide you don't like it. I need a third one like I need a hole in the head but hey, you can never have too many Kerns

@ DM...a wise man once told me...."stop comparing other preamps to the the Kern as everything will sound [thin] compared to a Kern." It's true...I still miss that Read Purity tho for slap..get up with me if you want to get rid of it please. :-)

@ Ernie...I'd love to try that F-X1 but sorry, can't come off a Kern for it. The Kern is my "snizzle."

Thanks for the interest, guys. I'll contact you if I decide to sell the Kern (modulus is in first position). I'm A/Bing it with some other preamps, including an Alembic F1X. Tough choices. Obviously, Ernie D, I'll pass on the F1X, nice as it is.

Modulus, is it me, or does the deep switch not do very much? At least not in comparison to others I've heard. Also, have you found tube rolling any benefit? I have some nice 60s/70s tubes and was wondering if you had tried this with any benefits (I seem to recall someone once saying that the EH tubes that come stock ended up sounding best).

Thanks, DM

Hey Dee-man:

Sorry for the late reply...I put rubys in mine. Found they were much warmer sounding than EH, GT, JJ. The deep switch doesn't make a HUGE difference. I just leave mine on and the bright switch off.

I hear that NOS 7057 long plates give it a nice growl but I haven't had the spare cash to try one yet..

There is a thread on FB somewhere that did tube comparison in the Kern

Thanks for the info, Mod. I have some older tubes I'll have to fiddle with. There's a Kern posted for sale if you're dying for a third. I'm leaning towards keeping mine. Sounds so full and tubey, and it's versatile enough to dial out the darkness if you want. Take care, DM
