Keyboard Bass Lines...Learning them too

It started with Gary Wright's Love Is Alive. Not a difficult line but still, not patterned as we typically learn and build these things because it was written on a keyboard. Still, cool tones & mode.

What are the notes?

I am not very familiar with "vintage" western music (I know the most popular songs of that time, who doesn't ), but in Serbia bass lines of folk, pop and later turbofolk and rock music were recorded on double bass till mid 70's, then on bass guitar till mid 90's. Since then almost every bass line I know was recorded on keyboards. Keyboard lines are most of the time complex and meant for them

The Doors "Riders on the Storm" was the first bass line that I learned on the keyboard. Ray Manzarek talks about how the bass payer, Jerry Scheff, said it was a difficult line to play on bass at about 1 min., 20 secs in the following vid . . .

Maybe it was because I didn't know what was or was not conventional as a new player, but this was the second song I learned in full way back in 1989 (the first was Whole Lotta Love). I learned it because it was easy fingering (for me), simple and repetitive.

Just yesterday, the song You Dropped A Bomb On Me by the Gap Band came on and I told my wife that it was the first song that made me want to be a bassist. This thread is reminding me that I need to sit down and figure out some new tunes as a practice exercise.

Brad Mehldau plays some really interesting stuff with his left hand during the breaks of this tune. Digging into these lines will turn your head inside out.

It's rooted in F. The best way to describe it is whole tone passages. It is easiest on a 5'er.

i believe the guy that played for Gary Wright also played on Gino Vanelli's ' Pauper in Paradise ' ... ?

Or having to work off a piano part, where you are told, "Just play the left hand of the piano." That'll wake you up real fast.

I used to get session work replacing sequenced bass parts. A lot of them were layed in by keys players some by composers so they were hand written, but it was an exercise in how keys players think.

I'm pretty sure Hyperactive by Thomas Dolby is synth bass. I never did learn how to play it well on bass guitar.

I did learn Gino's I Just Want to Stop. Nice bass line, nothing too tricky but a fun song to learn.

I see what you mean. I just bought a used 5 string. It's much easier.
