Khan VTDI output question

Hi all

I have recently picked up a vtdi for recording at home.

I am finding the output is super hot with my setup. Using the XLR out and the -6dB engaged I am still close to clipping even with my mic preamp gain dialled right back.

My set up is passive uspb into the khan and then straight into my interface, a tascam us1800. I use reaper to record.

I've tried the line ins which have a -10db pad and although this is a bit better I'm not sure I should be using that input. I've since picked up an XLR attenuator (-10dB) and using that in tandem with the khan's pad gets me to a better place, but I'm just wondering why it's so hot in the first place.

I guess my question is, are there any other khan users out there with similar experience?

The manufacturer‘s recommendation is to use the line input.

I never leave home without the Khan.

I’ve used it with many different consoles and I’ve never had an engineer mention that the Khan was too hot for their console.

I’ve had the same experience with a few different recording interfaces. Occasionally, I’ll bump down the gain switch to -6 if requested and that takes care the high gain issue.

You can use #9 or 10 line inputs for the Khan. Use a female XLR from the Khan to the TRS plug on the interface. These cables are easily made if one is half-handy with a soldering iron.

I find the Khan does have a hot output, and usually its padded at the DI (-6Db) and padded at the interface end (Focusrite 18i20), and still has to stay under 9 oclock or so on the gain. But it sounds great, so....
