Kick recipients

I noticed in a direct message that had been previously sent , there is an option to "Kick".
What is that?
When I clicked it on an old message it said something like "Are you sure you want to kick the following people?" with a spot to say why you are doing so.
I don't want to kick anyone if I don't know what "kicking" is!
