King Koa - Now With Nordy's!

I've had King Koa's electronics torn apart for a couple months as I waited on various electronic parts to show up. Once I received my Nordstrand NJ5 single coil pickups, I decided to install them and an Aguilar OBP-1 preamp at the same time. I'm loving the results, and the proof is in the listening!

I grabbed the sheet music for a vocal arrangement of "Seven Bridges Road", and I laid down 5 different bass tracks (one for each of the 5 vocal parts). Here's the complete mix:

Heh-heh. I still need to extract yours from the box and shoot some photos, too. Sorry that's taking me so long. I was having too much fun with MY Roscoe. LOL.

Sunbeams are a great string for sure. Inspired by the latest iteration of King Koa, I pulled out my CS5+J that is for sale and hasn't been seeing attention. It has the NJ5FS pickups and OBP-1. Holy crap it sounds good and plays so well too (of course). I only have it for sale to pay for other stuff I have on order/want, but at this point I'm tempted to hang on to it...

I've got to say Greg I was certainly impressed with the sound of King Koa at the Ga GTG. What part the Sunbeams played in that I'm not sure but that bass IMO sounds better than I've ever heard it.
Now I'm just trying to decide whether my next Roscoe will be the JJ model (with your pick up/pre combo) or the new MM model ..... both sounded so good and uniquely different from my more traditional Roscoe. really nice variation.

As a matter of fact I saw that Jeff had nice CS+ JJ model for sale ... :hmm:

How about your fretless? Did it ever get the Big Splits that were planned?

Yep, King Koa is still the same, and I'm still uber happy with it. The fretless is currently Roscoe Barts and an OBP-3. I tried the Big Splits, but I ended up accidentally splitting my wood pickup covers. So I'm back to the Roscoe Barts for now. I'm hoping to try a set of Aguilar Big Singles at some point in the fretless.

I recently put a set of .040 guage Sunbeams on my Lull M5V, and I LOVE that to pieces. I've been a .045 guy for a really long time, and the .045 Sunbeams were a fairly recent change for the better. Going with the .040's was just a random experiment that I really ended up liking. So my next change on the Roscoes will be trying .040's on them. I expect to like it, but ya never know...

I love .040-.100 on my Roscoes with a .125 B on the 5s. If you can back off your touch accordingly, you have that much more dynamic range when you do want to dig in without having to use a lot of force.

I'm very curious about those Aguilar Big Singles, but wish they would make a split/hum-cancelling version. In time I suspect they will if sales of the singles and DCBs are good enough to indicate a market for the soapbar sized pickups.
