Kip Winger

I think of Stewart from Beavis & Butthead wearing his Winger shirt. I read once that he tried to sue Mike Judge when B&B bashed a Winger video, calling him a wuss. Mike Judge signed a legal agreement saying he would no longer verbally bash Mr. Winger. The loophole is Stewart's shirt. lolz..

Well, guess I gotta chime in on this one. Saw them open for several bands, and when we had 4th row seats for Bullet Boys, Winger, & Poison I think. My lead guitarist pointed it out to me that he wasn't playing the bass line. Thought I was gonna fall off my seat! He was right' would have never noticed myself, but Once it was pointed out, he wasn't playing alot of the time and the bass line continued to go on. But I won't dispute that he was a good frontman at all.

I worked at the same music store, Piano's n' Stuff, as Reb's guitar tech Dave Lewis did, which was back in the mid 80's I think. And we would tease Dave about how horrible Kip's bass playing was. Dave's response was it wasn't Kip's job to play bass well, but it was to sing and dance and get all the girl's panties wet.

If his job first and foremost was to be the front man then why on gods green earth did they have him as the bass player. Have him play guitar or even no insturment then he would have been free to do what ever. Have a REAL bass player out there. Taking your hands off a bass and having the bass contiinue in a live situation reeks of Millli Vanilli. If I paid money to see a show and saw that I would be PISSED.

It's not like Winger was destitute and couldn't find a bass player and ended up playing it by default. If the bass player is going to be a front man then he should be good enough that he can sing, put on the show AND play the bass, otherwise hire a freaking bass player and just be a front man. Sheesh.

I caught Winger live one time. Kip is a natural frontman, makes it look easy, and he has chops. On occasion he does unison licks with Reb Beach, who is no slouch. Kip does let the bass hang loose alot, but manages to hold up his end. He doesn't sweat bullets over his basslines, he's too busy interacting with the audience. I thought it was an impressive performance.

Winger is good music (as in efficient...) with good musicians.
Reb Beach is an old favorite, and Kip is a frontman so he lets notes ring for posing time and singing duty.

At the time he made me aware of Spectors (17 video) and get the unshaven look....

In the 80's, you could really get a lot worse than Winger! Even in rock, everyone wanted to be Van Halen... Some were really TOTAL rip offs!

It's funny but I could rarely hear the bass in most of the music from 80's hair bands. Granted I come from a R&B background where bass was the backbone. But, Why single out Kip Winger? It seems typical for the genre. The One song that stands out in my memory of having a strong bass mix was Ratt... Round and Round.
