How good are these as monitors?

Im not really too bothered or looking at getting them in the immediate future, but i've been bored and looking about.

Which would be better suited to a small home studio setup? The KRK RP5 or KRK RP6? I looked at the RP8, but maybe a bit too much for at home. I'd also probably extend the set at a later date by adding the RP10S sub.

Anyone about here using these ?

The RP5's get a lot of good reviews for best monitors in that price range.

I've got RP5's and they sound alright. In that price range, I don't think you can do much better.

The yamaha hs series is much better. I think the little ones are about the same price. Your gonna have a hard time finding something very accurate that small and for that price. The KRK's arent bad but i havnet really liked their rockit series.

Ive looked into them, and it seems to be 6 and half a dozen (personal preference) when it comes to them

Well really when it comes to monitors you need to hear them for yourself. Of course, check out the best monitors out there so you have something to compare with.

Is the room you'd have the monitors sound-treated? If not, you don't really want to invest in good monitors unless you also have a good room, since obviously the room will greatly affect the sound you get from the monitors.

I use KRK Rokit8's. For $500.00 /pair they sound great. Especially with my basses.

I got the KRK Rokit5s and have no desire to get another pair. I would eventually like to get the 10in sub to tweak the sub lows a little better. They're punchy and clean. Mixing two acoustics and bass in a mix and I'm still able to hear the dampened overtones in the vocals. I enjoy mixing with them.

The room isnt treated, but will be moving at some point in the future, and will then possibly treat the room, im not too bothered about it being treated tho, as they arent ultra expensive monitors, and they'll be a hell of a lot better for mixing that the creative PC speakers ive got

I wish i could get the 8's, but they'd be about £400 for the pair, it's also a smallish room, so i've heard its best to avoid the bigger monitors in smaller rooms.

I also use the Rokit 5's for my home studio. They're great for the money, but a pro audio friend told me they are weak in the mids, so take that into account as well. I've had no problems at all.

I have no doubt they wont be perfect, if they were no one would be buying thier $5000 a pair speakers , im sure they'll be fine for the level of recording im doing.

I wish it was possible to try out some around here, but it just isnt something that is possible (ive not seen anywhere with a selection of studio monitors)

my friend owns the Rokit 5's. I've recorded and jammed over his place many times and have been Pleasantly surprised at how well those monitors sound. They really do a nice job of reproducing the bass frequencies as well (which is surprising in a 5" speaker).

This probably isnt what you want to delve into, but a monitor that lacks mids isnt uncommon. Getting another set of monitors is usually a good way to fix this. Really bad like radio shack monitors are usually extremely mid heavy. Having a set of $100 monitors along with those rockits would be a great monitoring solution. Thats why people have ns10's or auratones on the bridge, to check the mids.

Based on my experience with the larger BlueSky's, I would recommend the EXO system. Its a 2.1 system so bass reproduction isn't an issue.

Cheers for the recommendation, i had looked at the blue skys before, but must have only seen the more expensive ones as they were a tad out of my price range. From just having a gander at the EXO, the problem i'd have is with the 3" speakers, sounds daft, and most likely not something that matters a great deal, but i was really looking for something 5" or more, hell, im even still a bit apprehensive about the 5" rokits

With a sub, I'm not concerned about the size of the drivers in the satellites, only how well the crossovers are implemented. In the case of the BlueSkies, it is very good.

I spent some time with the KRK RP5 and felt they really needed the additional sub for accurate lowend decisions.

I recently scored a really nice used pair of Mackie HR-824 monitors for way less than half price. ($400) I can finally
hear whats going on with the lowend, and I know that my mixes are translating much better already.
I'm not a big Mackie fan, but I really love these monitors.

No personal experience, but...I was reading up on these when setting up my studio, mostly on homerecording.com. The upshot was that the 6 was the best of the bunch.

I wound up sticking with my '70's hi-fi speakers (B&W, Thiel, and DCM) to monitor.
