I can't tell you anything about that P/J except that I really like it. I'm curious what's under the pickguard seeing as those are EMG pickups.

Hello xhawk5. I am a little confused by the description of the bass. Phil had long since left Fender by the time this bass was made in 1980.
I am also leery of the immaculate condition; it just doesn't look like it had been played for years. Just my opinion.

Yea, I thought so too. Not too concerned with it's vintage-ness. I know it's old. I know Phil had left Fender by then. He was on his way to making those awesome Factors!... Thx for your reply Doc!

UPDATE:
Kubicki made neck, supposedly. No Name body. No markings to prove anything, just a letter. Seller lied or was misinformed. This bass is worthless to me. I'll hold out for a FACTOR someday...

I guess it comes down to the asking price. I mean, it looks like a nice PJ in VGC and if it's legitimately from 1980 (neck & body) it is somewhat special as Fenders 1st PJ wasn't produced until '89. As far as the neck being made by PK, it's possibly legit as he made many Fender style necks but I have no clue if he was allowed to keep doing it after he left Fender, sort of as an independent aftermarket licensed agreement. The decal is dubious as that combination was never on a Fender hs, (spaghetti script w/Telecaster under) PK usually stamped his necks/bodies w/Philip Kubicki Technology and his Santa Barbara address or had his own hs decal.

I have a pretty beatup factor in dark blue which is not my ideal, can anyone share if Kubicki shop still do the refinishing works? I sent couple of emails but no reply at all. I so regret i sold my yellow one, the x factor is such a remarkable design classic.

When Phil was still living I took my 1986 Factor to him and he told me it needed a new body since it looked like it had been through a war. I still have it and never got the new body. It has soul!

Saw this on ebay from Japan. What's the story on these again? Were they actually licensed by Phil? - I know there's a back story on these other than the reversed hs.

Those are unlicensed copies of the ExFactor bass.
Some visual differences: Copy has 24 frets, the headstock curves the wrong way, saddles are cut square instead of V notch, neck bolts, dials, bridge bolts.

So that was pretty gutsy having "Licensed By" on there - did they ever get sued by Phil?

[guitardr] would know more about that, but I don't think so. You need deep pockets for that sort of thing.
