I think I posted this story earlier in the thread, but owning Factors and speaking with Phil a few times on the phone over the years, I was visiting just north of him in Carpinteria and wanted to stop by his shop in Santa Barbara (a short drive). I called him and asked if I could visit with him (telling him where I was). He said, "well, that would be a long drive, as I live in New Hampshire".

Cool - I wonder if it's just the shot or does it have an overly extended hs? (longer than a standard Ex-Factor) And are those individual bridge units? Was this a prototype? I know of the Key Factor 5, but I like this design better.
Wait a minute...I thought the only (non Key version) Factor 5 was that blue one. When did this red one come up?

Interesting - so did you fill the hs holes? And just curious but why is the extension so long? The key factor was a cool design but jamming 5 keys on that narrow hs was a bit odd, especially since the B was spooled the opposite direction on the key. Your re-do would stir up the Kubicki purists, but you know.., who cares as long as it works -

Ya filled the holes then capped with rosewood, abm bridge ..... this one had the typical headstock pulling up problem and some body dings so it wasn't a great example of the key factor. ..... hey i recognize that bass are you jon?

No, I'm not Jon (?) Backstory: A guy from Europe found pics of my Factorbird fretless on a (Kubicki?) search and posted it and another hybrid Factor I did called the JFactor on the "Kubicki Factor" website. (official Kubicki site) I sold the JFactor years ago and I think he got pics of it from my eBay post and he probably got pics the Factorbird from tb. I still own the Factorbird, and pics of both are still on the Kubicki Factor site under 'hybrids' or something. I wasn't aware of this until I eventually visited the site. People from all over the globe were writing in lambasting my basses - but Stu Hamm chimed in; "cool". I'll accept his opinion over the rest as a thumbs-up from someone who should know…

I played the blue one at the shop and loved it. I tried to get Phil to sell it to me but he said he had to much into it and didn't want to sell it.
