Hank was not always drunk,,this seems to be a great myth,,I knew Don Helms very well,, and he and Hank were close pals,,and he really hated the fact that Hank was made out to be such a drunk when that really wasnt the truth,,Also thats not Hank Grland in this pic,,his pickguard reads Blackie,,but not sure who he is,,will do some checking,Kent

Well, nobody could be drunk 24/7! The history books have done a good job of painting that picture of Hank. He sure did sing and write about drinking and the like.....a lot. Thanks for the correction on the guitarist's identity, it's good to give credit where it's due. Cedric Rainwater. I *think* I started to enjoy his sound long before I found out his identity. I always loved his style of turning standard inversions upside down, maybe an influence from bluegrass, I dunno. It's pretty rare to hear modern bassists play Hanks tunes the way Cedric or any of Hank's bassists did for that matter!

Cedric was a really good player back in the day,,the best stuff he ever did was with Bill Monroe back when Flatt&Scruggs were in the band,,now thats some really intovatine bass playing,,but then again that was THE band,,most of Hank's commc recordings were studio bass players,,although Ced did a few,,he is on all of the New Mothers Best Flour Shows,,which is a box set of radio shows Hank did in the 50s,,really the best stuff of Hank thats been relesed in my oppn.Kent

Yeah Mike,,I kinda let the cat half way out of the bag on another thread,,so ,,I am in the process of updating the American Standard/King Mortone web site,,so everyone get your Standards,and Kings out and ready,, were gona update and hope too add quite a few basses to the data base,,I know alot of guys tried to add their bass,,and ask questions in the past, with no answer,,But I'm going to try to get all of this made right,,I also hope to feature some players with their A/S,King basses.I will let eveyone know when we get it up and going,,I hope to have it going in a week or so..Kent

Yup, Luke the Drifter was popular in my household when we discovered him in the early '70's! It was fun knowing that it was Hank using a pseudonym, and the band was top notch!
