New owner of G&L L2000. It needs a set up, but I'm thinking about putting flats on it to mellow it out.

L2000 question

One of mine is always strung with flats (Chromes) and I've always liked the way it sounds. I never run active on any of mine though,always passive. There's still plenty of punch and grind in passive mode.
Never had flats on mine but I also never use active and never have any knobs dimed. I am usually at v7 t4 b8 both pickups in parallel or series depending on the room. Kind of gives me a flats sound...mellow and bassy!
I always keep flats on my Trib L2k. Ive tried alot of different ones and have settled on chromes... again. You can get a real nice big tone with flats on these basses. Im still using mine for one of my rock gigs and it sounds great.
Well said. I want that big sound a L2000 gives yet it needs the warmth of flats. Sounds like an oxymoron but that's what I'm going for.
I have an ASAT semihollow fretless. Fretless gives it a bit different sound, but the pickups and electronics are identical to the L2000.
I've had a wide variety of strings on mine, and several sound very good, depending on what you want. I started with TI Flats, which sound very good and have excellent consistency from string to string. Sometimes I switch out, however, because the TI Flats are kind of low tension and sometimes I string with something with higher tension to facilitate faster playing.
Right now I'm using GHS Tapewounds. I seem to come back to these pretty often, as they are brighter and livelier than most tapewounds, sound about like La Bellas, but are less than half the price. I love the sound of these on my ASAT and they have a fast snap to them as well.
When I want more or a roundwound sound without too much snarl or treble, I use GHS Pressurewounds or Ken Smith Compressors, either of which use Alloy 52 wrap (52% Fe, 48% Ni) where the round wrap has been flattened a bit. They're quieter but still have plenty of definition, and the formula 52 has a warm, full sound with those MFDs.

Setup made a huge difference. The flats are really nice on there, although it may take a while to see if I stay that way.
Same here. I'm a flats guy generally and I've got flats on all my Fenders, but while they worked well on my L2k I felt they were holding it back so I switched back to rounds (DR Lo-Riders).
+1 I've got flats (GHS) on my Fender and Fender clones, and for a long time I went with rounds on the G&L but now I've sort of settled in on D'addario half rounds. Somehow flats just didn't do it for me and needed something just a tad brighter. TI flats could work, though.
