L2k Pickguard

Just wondering if anyone here has put a pickguard on an L2k? if yes, did you modify an existing pg or make one from scratch?

I'm going to be purchasing a tribby L2k in the very near future (i graduate in dec, college grad gift from me to me :D). My dilemma is, I play in a rock band where I use both finger plucking and heavy picking (sacrilege, i know) and I don't want to destroy the front of the bass. I'm thinking of maybe buying a pg blank from stewmac.com and designing one to attach with some double-stick tape. This way I don't need to drill it and can take the pg off when I don't plan on picking (indie thing I might be starting up).

I'm looking for inspiration here guys, pics would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

I'm curious about the look too but I don't have one or have seen one. I would imagine maybe a string ray style thing would work well enough, the egg thing. Though I would think this is grounds to experiment here.

I've seen a couple of G&Ls that folks made custom pickguards for. I remember pathdoc having a custom pickguard made for an L1505 in the old DP days. Apparently in Japan you can get clear pickguards on your L2Ks:

I think you are on your own making one. It sounds like a fun project - I think a pickguard and/or control plate (I miss the top-loader look) adds a lot to an otherwise plain bass.

Those mysterios Japan versions... What does "Tap" mean in "Series/Tap/Parallel"?

If you cant find a stock pickguard to fit, check out pickguardian.com. He says on the site that he can make just about anything, you would just have to give him some specs. Ive ordered from him before, good experience.

I was actually just looking into this ...

There are a couple of different options for attaching - I was thinking a few drops of Goop (TM), a sealant/adhesive should work, would be relatively easy to remove, and wouldn't damage the finish.

I was more interested in where to get them. Are there any "stock" pickguards out there? Does anyone have any templates that they could share that I could use for one of the custom pick guard places out there?

I love my L2K, but I think a nice black pick guard on it would look sharp!

Thanks!

Okay... You need to understand that Ken ain't a big fan of pickguards on an L-2000/2500/ASAT. But that's just Ken. So if the following sounds like a killjoy thing, it really isn't. It's more of a technical issue.

If your pickguard will extend down to the controls, you may run into a thickness problem. As in too thick. As in where the shanks of the switches & pots aren't long enough. It might be close, but I'm looking at my L-2500 and adding a 'guard that covered the controls area would be problematic.

So check it out before soaking your hard earned money into something that might become a wall decoration in your studio.

Ken...
