La Bella Manufacturing defect?

Seems to be a problem with the Deep Talkin' Bass Flatwound for through-body short scale basses in which the binding at the end of the low E string starts past the tuning gear instead of before it.

Whenever I string it up, there isn't enough binding to wrap all the way around the post, and all the traction put on the string makes it become unfurled, ultimately breaking.

I got a replacement pair of the same strings, and had the same issue. It's only the low E, the other strings are just fine, their binding starts well before the tuning machine. Any one else encounter this problem?

Just an idea for you if nothing else comes up:
Try something analogous to the "nut trick" (see photo) to force the ball back farther, which will pull the silk at the other end back farther. It works perfectly for me.

I have a Fender with string-through ferrules (which I don't use), and I see that the same nut-trick nuts I used on my Epiphone, "nut trick", just as in the photo linked above, just barely miss fitting inside the ferrule. 6-32 weren't big enough.

EDIT: #8 washers won't fit either. #6 fit perfectly but I don't know if that will work for you (can't let the core of the string, wrapped around the ball, bear directly onto the washer).
