Labella 760M vs 760FL

I haven't been able to determine the difference between the "M" and the "FL" even after reading alot of posts on the Labelle flatwounds. I'm currently using TI flats on my G&L 2000, and I like them, but I agree with alot of you that the lower tension requires some getting used to.

I've had them a month and I'm ready to try the Labellas. I think thicker, stiffer strings would do the trick.

Aside from the fact that the M's seem to be twice as expensive - which is fine if I like them better - can anyone tell me how they differ from the FL's?

AFAIK there are three gauges of DT 760s.
FM (medium) .049" - .109"
FS (standard) .045" - .105"
FL (light) a little lighter than the FL's.

The LaBella 760FL set feels very nice, Like an average set of hex core round wounds. They might be just a touch softer (I mean a touch). I've never tried the FS or FM sets, but I've read they are quite stiff.

I would consider the FS's to be average tension and an excellent string. Gotta have those .105's for good thump.

I've got 'em on a Jazz and a P. TI's on the other P -- another excellent string.

the FL's are my favorites. the FS were too stiff, and i'm sure the FM are even worse (unless you're into really stiff strings).

the FL are more tense than roundwounds (even fenders) but once they break in, they loosen a little and have a great feel. the string sizes are well balanced.

just a great set with a nice low mid presence. i've swapped flats so many times on my old jazz and i always come back to the labella FL's, they just sound right to me.

Thanks guys....I guess the "L,S&M" designations are fairly obvious when you realize what the letters stand for!

I think I'll try the M's...first.

I really had to completely change the way I play with the TI's because they are so "loose". Makes the left hand really fly and I find I can play tougher riffs better and faster. Interestingly, however, I notice that I'm hitting a limit making it tougher to speed up the right hand because of the care you need to take when you finger pick.

Also, I'm probably losing callous and strength in the left hand. I'll see how things go on the other side of the spectrum.

Folks, he didn't say '760FM', he said 760M which is the Jamerson set and it's the thickest and tightest flats that Labella makes.

Here's a breakdown, from lightest to heaviest:

760FX = extra-light
760FL = light
760FS = standard
760FM = medium
0760M = the 'Jamerson' set

Thanks....that cleared up the last bit of confusion. I was considering the Jamersons, but was assuming they were the same as the "FM"s.

When I originally put the TI's on, my neck relief went completely away, and I took a day or two to loosen the rod to get some relief back! Never had such a big change in tension before. I don't think I want to try the Jamersons just yet, I'll try the FMs first.
