Lakland 44-02 Super Wide String Spacing

I wanted to hear the new Lakland LH3 pickup system, so I went to a nearby dealership to test one out.

There was no 5 string so I tried out a 44-02 Skyline 4 string. The new pickup system sounds AMAZING. But, the string spacing was crazy wide at the bridge.

I looked it up and the 44-02 is 19.81mm at the bridge! I've never played a bass with string spacing that wide - it was very difficult to adjust. By contrast a standard jazz bass is about 19mm at the bridge.

Has anyone else had an issue with this, or do you know why Lakland would choose such a wide spacing compared to more traditional instruments?
