Lakland 5502 string level problem

Hi.I'm the new guy.
In all of my years as a tech I've never seen this one;
Lakland 5502 w/Bart pickups.
All functions normal except,
When balance pot is centered the A string is noticeably lower in volume and has less low frequency response than the other strings.As soon as you move the pot off of center -either direction- the A string output becomes balanced with the others.
String height good.Strings good.Electronics checked good.
Only thing I can think of is some sort of phase cancellation going on with only that string because it is the only string splitting the pickups,but why?
chime in anytime guys
