Lakland 5594 Bass Amp Recommendation?

Hi guys,

How are you guys doing. Thanks for reading the thread. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. I am looking for a perfect amp for my Lakland 5594 which I got recently. I am looking for a 200-400 Watt full/open/huge sound with deep/warm bottom that's also punchy. Any combo amp or head+cabinet recommendations are welcome.

**200-400 W in power
**To be used inside a high ceiling church (room occupancy is around 400 people)

The best thing to do would be to take your bass to a music store and try out as many amps as you can. But you're gonna have a hard time finding something that doesn't sound sweet with that bass. There is not a specific amp that you have to use with a Lakland.

Will you have any PA support support or will your rig be expected to carry the show? If you're looking for a rehearsal/on-stage monitor solution where you DI to FOH, the criteria for selecting something might be a bit more flexible. Very few combos I have any experience with can effectively meet your criteria for a large 400 person hard rocking venue if they would have to carry it on their own.

This weight on having the right amp is pretty significant in creating an excellent sound. Are there any amp gurus out there who can chime in for a little head / cabinet or combo brands/models experience that they've had? Any bass amp 101 and variances out there will be helpful. Don't forget strings and cab selection too Lots of amps will do the job you want. There are always those that will throw in recommendations for the amp/cabs that they like. Ultimately it is personal preference.

The ability to produce a great bass sound is a correctly characterized as a combination of many things as I think you were trying to say, although the %'s are honestly up for grabs. However, your question here involves the selection of an element that is neither the player nor the bass - it's the amp/cab/combo equipment responsible for delivering that sound to an audience with or without introducing its own coloration.

If you will be running through the PA system and just using your "equipment" (amp/cab/combo) to hear your self on stage then you have one set of options. If you need for your "equipment" (amp/cab/combo) to produce loud rock in a church that seats 400, you are looking at different set of options.

I can pretty much assure you that Hard Rock in venue as large as you've described will likely be a challenge for many if not most combos on their own, and if you have drums and electric guitar (and possibly keyboard), I can't imagine anything solid state in the 200 Watt range having enough power to carry the day without PA support, let alone operate with any headroom.

If you can let us know if you intend to carry the room with your bass rig or if you will have PA support for the bass, you'll probably get some good recommendations to consider. I hope that helps!

During the period I was playing a 55-94 in a country western band, I was using an Eden WT-800 amp and a D-410XLT hen. It sounded great but may be a bit oudated. In your price range the Subway D800+ would be a good amp with the hen of your choice.

I'll bet that was one sweet sounding rig! Given the OP's budget at the upper end ($1200), I would think a GS212 with a TH500 (both used or with a healthy discount new) might be an acceptable substitute for something close. And to be clear, I'm not suggesting that that a TH500 is on the same level as a DB750/751, but it is at least in a similar tonal/voice family and more affordable.

If I had to offer a specific suggestion it would be the Mesa D-800 and a Mesa PH212 or GK Neo212. While the Subway cabs or a Berg CN212 would be my preferred cabs with a D-800, I think that budget-wise they wouldn't get out of the starting gate unless bought used form a very generous seller. However, there are a lot of other great options as well, any of which could be a great answer.

I would try as many amps out as possible. It's the only way to get exactly what you want.

Do your research, narrow down your field of options to two or three rigs. If possible try them out in the room you're planning to play in (not in a store) if not, just buy one, but BUY USED. Then, if it doesn't work for you you have a better chance of recouping your money and trying something else.

This is not a quick and easy process.

Genzler Magellan, Mesa D800 or GK MB500 head and a GK Neo212 cab. All heads are great, the Genzler is more versatile IMO than the other two. The GK Neo212 is a great cost effective cab.

Actually, forgot to ask if you have bartolini or lakland pickups. Mine had barts originally which have super dense mids and loved the natural mid scoop of the db750. Then I switched to the lakland pickups which were very crisp and dry. Those would likely be better with a db751 or th500, and a DB212 instead of a gs212 (just sticking with Aguilar examples because thats what I like).

DB750 and Eden WT800....I like the way you guys think I would also demo a GK...perhaps 700RB. I generally prefer used gear as you get more for the $ obviously.
