Hey all, I could really use advice here. I bought a used lakland 55-02 (skyline) and it's clipping even at low volume. Playing through GK fusion head(500 watts) and a Mesa cab. I cantell you it's not the cord or the battery. I don't think it's the amp either, because my fender (passive) plays through it fine. The only way to make it usable is to make sure the amp is in active mode, turn the gain down to about 2 or 3, and turn the master way up (stil clips on hard articulations on E snd B string). It seems to me that the input is too hot, but I've turned down the output adjustment on the instrument's preamp- nothing. Interestingly, if I switch the amp back to passive mode, it's full blown distortion, even low volume. Thoughts??

Lakland bass clipping/distorting

I just did. I was surprised that the issue was mostly gone, unless I boosted the mids from the preamp. So if that's the case, why is my good amp exaggerating the clipping/distortion?
I did have an issue with my amp a while back. It was making a windy sound, so I replaced the 3 preamp tubes, and it fixed that problem.
I checked the battery with a multimeter, it's good. The Jack is fine. I'm scared that it's the preamp in the instrument.
Despite the meter reading when the battery is under load the voltage may drop sufficiently that the preamp isn't working properly. First thing I'd do is try replacing the battery with a fresh one. Couldn't hurt.

I know this is an old thread but if anyone has issues in the future, adjust the internal trim pot and reduce the active volume close to the passive volume. I had similar issue with mine.
