Brief gig report:
The 55CS was immediately noticed by the band I played with last night, even while I was just tuning up the the M6>Henry 8x8 rig
"What is that thing, it sounds great!"

Nice hefty lows, but I'd like a little more mid push and a little more top end presence. I think fresh strings, and more specifically fresh nickles will probably get me there. I'm not a stainless rounds guy, and the lakland ss on there seem to not be so fresh either....

It plays out nicely. Sounds pretty good, so next step is fresh strings to see where that takes me.

So far, we've bonded more readily than the MTD535 I had recently (completely an "art bass" in terms of craft, but, complete fail, for me, sonically) and Sadowsky RV5-PJ (nice bass, just not my thing sonically either).

I had the same issue with the Lakland's... except, when I got my 55-02, they were supposedly just put on... and they seemed somewhat fresh. Just sounded lifeless to me though, and at first I thought it might be the bass that I didn't like (first experience with the Lakland LH3's), and was really disappointed. However, slapped some trusty ol' DR Hi Beams on and BAM!!! Sonic bliss. Not a fan of those Lakland strings (sorry).

I've been tempted to try out the Dunlops since they've been getting good reviews. After a somewhat exhaustive string hunt a couple years back (10 different sets/brands of strings in 3 months), I'm so hooked on the DR's, and can't bring myself to ditch them. Nothing else I tried came close to my ear at the time. So, I'm a bit skeptical with changing.

I've had a very similar experience. I worked for Guitar Center for some time in the past and had the opportunity to have every string I ever wanted at an amazing price and ran a little shoot out on my bass at the time a US Peavey Cirrus. DRs came out on top and more specifically the Sun beams..
Love them to death

and now there are some new strings on the market that interest me like R. Cocco and Dunlop but it's very hard to pull me away from DRs when I spent months finding the right strings and these won every battle by a mile

So on Monday I went down to see Pat Wilkins:

He's got a small nondescript shop in a small industrial district of Van Nuys, so much so that I wasn't sure if I was at the right place. It's close enough to ride my bike so I made a little adventure out of the experience. When I got inside it was totally different. He had a couple of Laklands which had their first few coats and were waiting for their turn to be finished. (A nice blue Decade caught my eye) And I also learned how to pronounce Alleva-Coppollo!!

Dropped off my beloved lakland to get Teal Metallic with a matching headstock. That's Doude for getting your JJ it really pushed me over the edge on Teal Metallic! All in all I was there for about 10 minutes and got to check out the shop and Pat himself. So if you guys ever need to get your bass painted Definitely check out Pat's shop and his work. He had some amazing stuff on the walls some; quilted Laklands that just looked gorgeous I almost snatched everything and left my girlfriend as a trade ;)

4 - 5 Weeks and counting.

I too had a US Cirrus (2 actually), very nice basses!! I honestly liked the Peavey Cirrus strings on mine, but then... I never put DRs on them :smug:.

I'm now a "DR Stainless Man" on all my non-P basses.

I'm REALLY digging the Dunlop nickels on my CAR Glaub/Dunn (Goblin) though!

I've heard some very good things about dunlop

and i never tried the cirrus strings but I'm sure they sound awesome. A lot of instrument makers put out some good strings to use for their instruments. For example I HATE ernie ball strings I think they're whack in many ways... but on a musicman they sound pretty snazzy...
