Down here, "in these parts" we just do meth 'til our teeth fall out.
That's an awesome piece, and one of my favourite pieces of music on youtube, ever.
But it doesn't really add anything to the original argument, which was (implicitly) "you can do it all with a Lakie" .... just listen to how he exploits that instument. Sure, you could play the notes on any bass instrument (or could you ? not sure how far up the fingerboard he goes) but you couldn't get the same effect on anything but an upright ... and you might have to be Ray Brown too

I use Labella flats on my 55-94D ... a great combo, IMHO. I bought it strung with roto rounds (a fresh set I think) which I really didn't get on with and soon after developed my own flats obsession. I'm now moving away from the flats-on-everything phase and I'll be trying out the Lakie with some rounds that I know do work for me elsewhere, D'Addario nickels.
BTW, I suspect that with flats (particularly well worn in ones) I'm losing some of difference between the two soloed coils of the MM pickup. I think that with fresh strings, and rounds, you'll get more harmonic content and that difference will be more pronounced.

I just noticed that there is a slight space between the G and D bridge saddles on my new 55-01. All of my other
5-string Skyline basses that I've owned always had the bridge saddles right up against each other, making contact.
This is one of the newer Indonesian made "PLEK'd" ones.
Any thoughts?

I have a set of GHS flats on my Bart equipped -02. I can't see myself going back to rounds anytime soon, the flats give the bass a super thick sound, but it still punches through and is plenty articulate.

Sounds like you go for a similar tonal palette with your string choices: nickel rounds and flats. You hit the nail on the head regarding my main concern, which is that I might lose some nuance in terms of the tonal differences with coil splitting. The -02 is the one bass I have that is dark and smooth enough anyway with rounds that I feel I might not gain as much with flats. Still pondering.

It wasn't intended to add to anything other than showing that good playing is good playing, and 2 frets or lack thereof doesn't change that.
If 2 frets are important, why not get a 6, 7 or 8 string bass and get 40 higher frets! Or tune 2 steps higher. Heck, get a double neck with a guitar and a bass and go bonkers!
But it was mainly an excuse to post a Ray Brown clip..
What's with the bass player being so visible? Shouldn't he be stashed behind a pole or a plant somewhere? Or does that only happen to me?

We heard our Middle School's Jazz Combo B (7th graders) last Wed. In the current climate of pre-packaged bubble gum crapp@la that passes for 'music' these days, it's inspiring to hear the kids laying down Davis and Coltrane tunes where every kid takes at least one solo during the concert.
He he he! Yeah...they always put the stings on the end up front. I'm not going to argue! These guys solo too! I was amazed by the progress the band made. We transferred Nathan to this school, and one of the talking points was the music program. I think they are going to Disneyland next year to compete.

Nice one! Yeah...sure something magical about the 02 and 94 basses. They just do it all!...or close to it!

Very nice! That perloid pickguard really makes that bass pop. Enjoy it! That B-string will become the envy of bassists all around your area. The best in the bass world!
