Such strong words.:D Nah, I haven't found one I detest, either--MIA Fenders are generally good-to-really good, IMO. But the newer ones don't seem to have that growl I expect from a jazz bass. I like the sounds of all the Skyline Js better--the JO with Fralins, the DJ with Aeros and the JOs and DJs with Hansons, in that order.

My entire problem with Fenders is the QC is hit or miss. There have only been a handful that I have played that feel right. I'm 99.9% sure that I'll end up with the JO...Lakland has been very good to me in the CS aspect in the past and to me, that warrants brand loyalty.

My experience has been the opposite: I've found that Fender's QC issues were solved for the Am. Std. Line in 2008, whereas I'm on my second 5502 due to a Skyline QC issue that I'm sure I'd not have had if I'd gone for a US Lakland. With Fenders, I'd stick to a post 2008 American Standard or American Deluxe. And I'm done with the Skyline series--or at least, I sure wouldn't buy one sight-unseen. I'm not the only one who's had problems with them.

What problems are you having? I have 2 55-02's and both are awesome. Also are you buying used or new? Don't mean to be rude but when some one makes a very generic statement I'm having QC problems I'm done with that model bass, makes it hard to see where you are coming from or offer any advice.

It's long gone, and the story was done to death a couple of years ago when it was current. Suffice it to say that it was a preamp issue and one of the first things that the Hanson guys did when they bought the company was to send me a new one, which works extremely well.

I'm not going to tell anyone not to buy a Skyline, but I always say to try before you buy. A quick glance back at the past few years of TB threads shows that I'm not unique in having had issues, though there haven't been too many of us, at least. Still, crowing about how great Laklands are and tossing the Skylines into that pot carelessly tastes like crossing the line into, uh... fanboyism (new word! win!) to me. I'd buy a US one sign unseen in a snap, but not a Skyline. No way.

i bought both of mine sight unseen as no dealers close enough to me. i weighed my options and i guess i got lucky twice. my next lakland will be a 55-94 ;-)

I agree...an LH3 is a tough thing to be without.....did I mention that one of the MAIN engineers for the LH3 will be at thge Lakland GTG in October!? any quesions for him? let us know... or better yet - COME YOURSELF!!! details on the LOG or in the GTG forum here.

But that's not statistically significant, is it? If it's a minority of basses that have problems, then it logically follows that teh vast majority of buyers will get good basses. I didn't say that the Skylines were lemons, I just said that there are QC issues that we Laklanders don't like talking about, and that nobody should buy without trying.

The fact that there was no dealer near you is the wildcard though, isn't it? here in Montréal there's only one store authorised to sell them. Fortunately, there are two locations, but they keep a tiny array of Laklands in stock, so buying without trying first is a reality here as well. Which is why I'm pretty much done with Skylines. I got bit once, and though I don't run that big a risk of getting bit again, I just feel that it's more logical to touch something that costs bass-level money and test it out before becoming its owner.

I'd like my next Lakland to be a 55-94 as well. I even have all the options lined up in my head. It's gonna be hottt.

to clarify...he got a NEW bass...not just a new LH3.....

yup...you had Issues..no denying it....glad it worked out though...after a few "trial" fixes....also, when you were having your issues, Carl was "on hiatus"...I am SURE he would have fixed it...

I think you're probably right about Carl, but honestly, a new bass was pretty okay too ;)

Either way, I'm glad to be a happy Laklander again. And will be happier if I can ever get the scratch together for a US one.

Oh yeah. My wife finally told me to shut it off at about 9:15 pm. We live in an apartment complex and I was running it through my 810 lol I had to crank it! Sounds great and so versatile too! Still need to explore all the possible tones, but I love it. Action is low and smooth. And the neck...oh the neck! Awesome! Thin and quick. I will post better pics soon!
