LAKLAND PROBLEM !!!!

My lakland 55-94 delux sounds great but i have been having a problem .

whenever i dig in a little harder my signal distorts! originally i thought it was an amp problem! but last night i did a gig where i went directly into a DI and used in ears . the problem was still there !

I dont know if the problem loose wiring or what i have had it checked out and the tech said there is no problem with the wiring .

i thought it might be something to do with the output gain on the basses active preamp that is turned to high it is about 3/4 full ! not qiute sure what to do .

i hope the preamp is ok cause its in a molded casing so i cant get in there to check it out and wouldnt really want to . has anyone else out there had this problem?

thanks doc! that would solve everything ! i am really not digging that hard , i have tried a lighter touch . but that seems too light cant get the attack i am looking for in certain situations . then again its probably just bad technique but thats a whole other story !!

i will try lowering the preamp gain . i dont think its the battery ! but hey i will get my meter out and check it to be sure!

Make sure your pickups are low enough. I actually ran in to the same problem yesterday on my Jazz bass. I had just adjusted my neck and raised the pickups a little.

What was happening was that when I played harder the string either touched or was too close to the pickup and I would get distortion or a "Clip". Looking into what was going on I saw that it was the pickup height. I lowered them back to about the original height and problem solved.

thats sounds about right , i recently raised them too , i have been attempting the four finger ( mathew garrisson approach) so i raised the pickups to facilitate the technique along with the bass ramp! but i will try come to some sort of middle ground of what i want and what it should be .

is any one on the forum using this technique on their lakland ! hope i can get it right!

I've got a 55-94D, play fairly hard and keep the volume at 10 with no problems thru a bunch of different amps. EQ is flat except for a little mid-range bump. Haven't had a problem unless I forget to change the battery...:rolleyes:

Couple of thoughts:

1) If a tech checked it, he probably checked the battery - but you might want to do this just to be sure. Should be at least 8.5v.

2) Is your eq flat? If not, try that. A ton of bass boost might distort it, not sure but worth a try.

3) Does it do it in passive mode too? Pull the volume knob "out" to put it in passive mode.

4) If your pickups are very high, that will definately do it. Nothing unusual about a Lakland setup with Bartolini's, and any pickups can do this (that I've used, anyway).

5) I'm assuming you plugged the bass directly into the DI box and nothing between - if not, pull whatever it was out of the signal chain. If it was direct to the DI, then to the board then I'd rule all of that stuff out at the moment.
