I really like the tone of the DJ with retro. The 55-02 with Lakland electronics sounds swell as well, although I dont really enjoy the tone of the older bartolinis.

    My vote goes to DJ.

I voted for the 55-02 since that is close to what I have (55-94) and I just love the tone. I have never heard a DJ-5 or a 55-01 with Nordies, though.

  5. I love my DJ5 (with Audere), but I absolutely LOOOOVVVEEEEE my 55-02 with Laklands for versatility. You won't be disappointed in either one....

im all about the jazz on steroids sound for slap and overall versatility, although the 55-02's are amazing basses and im sure the nordstrand pickups would be a huge improvement for the 55-01's although they are formidable as stock basses as well.

my vote went to the DJ.

Contrary to popular opinion I love the old Barts in my 55-94. I'm going to check out one with the Laklands soon though, maybe I'll do one of each. The Barts are nice and billowy in the lows (like velvet), powerful in the mids and pristine in the highs. Some say the highs are too polite but I don't think so-- they're just not harsh. I definately voted for the 55-02.

    some opinions please...thanks

  14. As far as the 55-02 goes the tone is fantastic with the Lakland pickups and preamp. The slap tone it killer. I played a 55-94 a few years back with the Bartolini setup and wasn't crazy about it. It was much darker than my 55-02 with the Lakland electronics. The 55-02 is much better than some of the higher end basses that I've owned/played.

  15. I don't care for the whole two-single coil pickup sound. The 55-02 offers it, but that's not its only sound.

I voted for the DJ with J-retro because I know I can get it to sound good while "slapping" even though I cannot slap worth a c**p (is that allowed?)...anyways - the other bass player at church is a FANTASTIC slapper and he can get my DJ or my 55-02 singing!!! It all really depends on whether you like 4 string or 5 string......
