I really like the tone of the DJ with retro. The 55-02 with Lakland electronics sounds swell as well, although I dont really enjoy the tone of the older bartolinis.

My vote goes to DJ.

i already have a lakland 4-94 i put some nordstrand 4.2 and nj4se the bad thing is that i put some retro preamp but i don´t know sounds great but a little dark, by the way i had a lakland darryl jones with retro but i had to sold it now i just want a 5 stringer

im all about the jazz on steroids sound for slap and overall versatility, although the 55-02's are amazing basses and im sure the nordstrand pickups would be a huge improvement for the 55-01's although they are formidable as stock basses as well.

my vote went to the DJ.

so you should like the nordstrand big singles but i saw somewhere hat they are a little bit dark is this true?

Contrary to popular opinion I love the old Barts in my 55-94. I'm going to check out one with the Laklands soon though, maybe I'll do one of each. The Barts are nice and billowy in the lows (like velvet), powerful in the mids and pristine in the highs. Some say the highs are too polite but I don't think so-- they're just not harsh. I definately voted for the 55-02.

mmm.... i had the originals bart pickups on my lakland they were good but nordstrand are better but a little dark...now i´m very intersted on buying some bartolini CB classic bass series i want to see some one who has played these pickups

As far as the 55-02 goes the tone is fantastic with the Lakland pickups and preamp. The slap tone it killer. I played a 55-94 a few years back with the Bartolini setup and wasn't crazy about it. It was much darker than my 55-02 with the Lakland electronics. The 55-02 is much better than some of the higher end basses that I've owned/played.

I voted for the DJ with J-retro because I know I can get it to sound good while "slapping" even though I cannot slap worth a c**p (is that allowed?)...anyways - the other bass player at church is a FANTASTIC slapper and he can get my DJ or my 55-02 singing!!! It all really depends on whether you like 4 string or 5 string......
