IIRC that wasn't Graham. Might even have been Sly. It's been a whiile.

Anyhoo... I saw GCS live in DC when the first album came out.

To see this bassist who was pretty much 8' tall with the hair and the shoes not only playing impossible (at the time) stuff on bass but being the frickin' lead vocalist too.

The coolest thing was that my first band went together to that show. Got to see how it's really done. Jaw dropping.

I win;)

Graham also did some pretty cool session work back in the day, like the Betty Davis projects with some Sly alums.

it was deffinitly a sly and the family stone song, and i just kinda assumed it was larry on bass coz he played it on his instruction video using his 'LG' pic

Possibly, but I remember in the "Rock and Roll" documentary on PBS from 10 years ago, he was slapping "Dance to the Music" on the beach to demonstrate the technique, and said "I need my fuzz box for this part."

He was the bassist at the time though I'm pretty sure Sly was uncredited on bass on "Fresh". He had that kind of bounce to his playing.

even if sly is a good bassist he is nowhere near larry the best funk & Rock bassist , inventor of slapping and for last the best basslines creator and why are sly & tfs are credited to be a rock & roll band and funk band. :bassist:

That's nice... but he didn't play bass on "If you want me to stay".

No one is saying Sly was on Graham's level, we were talking about who played a particular song... and apparently Graham didn't.


I've been a fan of Larry's since the 60's but I think you might want to spread that credit around a little farther.

Definately GCS. I have followed Graham from the Sly years where he was sort of limited,he still had to alway's play in the context of Sly's music. Thank you was his breakout song. I saw Larry in the late 60's with Sly and was totally blow away by his sound and his hands being a foot long! GCS was Larry's vehicle to express HIS self the way he wanted to. The very first record on the first album GCS tells the whole story "We been waiting" for so long, waiting to play for you some of our song! Then he breaks into "ain't no fun to me"! He follows that up with "hair" the album goes on and on! Turn it over and play "can you handle it" and you will hear how he felt about Sly, Sly went down from there!

The heart of his beef with Sly, was he felt that he should have been given writing credits on a few of those songs. Sly firmly disagreed.
