Double Bass Larry Grenadier - The Gleaners. Solo Album

I haven’t heard much buzz about Larry Grenadier’s forthcoming release(2/22) “the Gleaners”. I plan on pre-ordering it. I look forward to hearing what folks have to say! The examples on ECM’s web site peaked my interest for sure!!!! Check in when you give the album a listen!

As much as I dislike the trio he got famous in, I have to admit this is a really great album. I got an early promo and I'll get the CD. I feel he really understood the historical significance of doing a solo album for ECM. His arco is fantastic on this.

Not sure. I feel as if I heard he owns an old German bass and a hybrid Chinese bass. In the pics on the CD, it looks like an old German bass.

Incidentally, I have listened to this album and absolutely love it. The musical whole is well conceived and the playing is great. Larry has set the bar high.

The basses are his classic old German bass and a bass by Ben Puglisi. String wise I'm not sure... a mishmosh of helicore hybrids, a string by Genssler, and some others...

That's correct! I forgot he owns the Puglisi brother, sister bass to Christian McBride. Whatever he is playing sounds great on the recording. : ). Thanks, Dan.

Just saw Grenadier play a solo concert at the Blue Whale in LA last night. Such a beautiful set of music. If you’re in the Bay Area he’s playing a solo set in San Jose tomorrow. Definitely a must see.

Something I noticed that was cool bass nerd wise was that whenever he tuned to the F# D G D scordatura, he tuned the F# to F# harmonic, or 5th partial, on the D string thus getting a just major 3rd. I’ve been fooling around with that scordatura today as well as trying it with the A string tuned up 2 cents and it’s super nice and resonant. The harmonics lend themselves to some beautiful melodies and chords.

It's an old thread but there's a Larry Grenadier solo set available at Village Vanguard, it's still up for streaming until today 8PM if I'm correct. He's playing some music from this record plus other stuff as well.
