Last Dance with Mary Jane?

anyway, i'm surprised you guys couldn't do "last dance" and/or "breakdown" (not surprised that you didn't want to, that makes total sense); around here those two songs are the go-to jam session "we don't know anything else" tunes to play.

Had a guy make a not entirely unreasonable request Saturday but he was a bit of an ass about it, then a bartender tells me to not play any more of his requests because he's always like that, and he also ordered a lemonade and wanted it split into two glasses for two women. He behaved afterwards, but on my way out I see a police van outside and guess who they're talking to...

Whenever Mary Jane's Last Dance makes it onto our set list (which is all too frequently), I play the bass line a la Dani California instead.

I'm not too fond of any of the Tom Petty songs we do, and the one song I didn't mind playing since the chicks ate it up, American Girl, we no longer do. :facepalm:

We used to cover that song and it went over surprisingly well for an alt country band. It really helps if you have a harp player and we did a good one. As for Mr. Drunk in public I love those guys, miss them...ummmmm not really.

I do like how people see a band and just think they know any song by any band on the fly...right.

I too am over Mary Jane. We ran through it at practice Saturday night, and it just screams "filler" to me. I look over my shoulder, and my drummer has his head leaning back against the wall -- pretending to be snoozing through the song. Singer still likes it because he can break out is harp.

I enjoy playing American Girl -- never fails to fill the dance floor. Runnin' Down a Dream is a good rocker that can raise the energy level in the room. I'm working on getting You Wreck Me onto the list as well.

Tom Petty does a cool cover of Oh Well by Fleetwood Mac.

If I had my way we would focus only on original material in our project - we don't play too many gigs, anyway, and none of us are proficient to pull off covers reasonably enough to do them justice. And frankly, none of us really have the time to dedicate to learning and playing others' songs, if we want to focus at all on our own stuff.

The guitarist in our project wants to do some Tom Petty. Not a huge problem. I mean I really like some of Tom Petty, and it fits reasonably well into our music style. But they want me to sing because I sound the most like Tom Petty, and I'm just starting to get the bass and singing thing down. Plus, early on the other bandmate insisted on doing Old 97s songs, as in more than one. I love Old97s. But I also hate butchering them. In any case, most people aren't going to recognize an Old97s song, thus eliminating a major reason for playing a cover in the first place. So I've been trying to put the stopper on covers, and started finishing some of my own songs. That way, at any time there is a "so, what else should we try?" moment, I can pull something new out before someone starts playing their hacky version of whatever famous bands' song, and expect me to join in (which I usually do, because, well, we have similar tastes, and I could usually pick a simple line out on the spot).

Just spent a bunch of minutes writing this, then remembered the thread was really about that drunk guy.

My dream is to play with a band that just does unpopular and little known covers that are actually really good songs. #radiosucks
