My own take is to show them exactly what they are going to get stylistically, fills and all.
Hi, I'm me, this is how I talk and this is how I play. My own style. Hope it fits in with yours. Everybody's different.

I had my first audition for a classic/modern rock cover band last night. I'd spent a week learning the songs and I decided to add a little flavor to some of the more bland ones. Nothing huge just a few fills and pickups. Is this an acceptable practice for being in a cover band? I thought so, but the drummer kept giving me funny looks and now I'm nervous that I may have overstepped some sort of boundary.

And yes, if you want to do Mustang Sally, I will do it and DO IT RIGHT.
Personally, I play it like the record to get the gig, then I'll ask them about what their expectations are...it is at that point you can decide whether to take the gig or not.
But that's just me.
Congrats!I did indeed get the gig.
...I need to find some cabs to complete my rig.
I used to take liberties on the end of that song, by octave skipping the second measure, then walking passing notes on the last couple of measures. No complaints, and no compliments, because the focus of that part of the song is on the lead guitarist anyway. I figured no harm no foul.I'm pretty much with the "be yourself" crowd if it's a cover band and not a tribute band. OTOH, "Comfortably Numb" is probably not a good song to take liberties with - the bass is pretty well defined on that song - the bass and drums have to create a trance on that or the effect is ruined.
KO
What's in your rig now? What kind of cabs are you interested in?
Any thoughts on my plan? Any idea the lead time Avatar's lead times? I may end up picking something up from a local store to get me up and running....
This was also one of the songs we did. I did a good amount of playing during the solo and I think I may have stepped on the guitar a little and probably deserved the look I got for it.
But with everything else I think those who suggest that I don't want the spot if they demand I stick strictly to the recording are right. Thanks for helping me put it in perspective!
