Last Night's Audition

My own take is to show them exactly what they are going to get stylistically, fills and all.

Hi, I'm me, this is how I talk and this is how I play. My own style. Hope it fits in with yours. Everybody's different.

^This. Be in a band that wants a bass player that thinks like you do. Don't fall for the "I want to win the audition no matter what". Its no fun to be in a band that wants you to play exactly like the record when you like to improvise a bit. If you want to be in a band that does covers exact, don't get into a jam band.

Give them what you do best. Its up to them to like it or not.

The exception: Obviously if you need the gig money to live, the smart thing to do is ASK them what they want, jam band, record copy, or something in between. And then try to accommodate them.

I had my first audition for a classic/modern rock cover band last night. I'd spent a week learning the songs and I decided to add a little flavor to some of the more bland ones. Nothing huge just a few fills and pickups. Is this an acceptable practice for being in a cover band? I thought so, but the drummer kept giving me funny looks and now I'm nervous that I may have overstepped some sort of boundary.

It would've been a good idea to ask if they stick to the record before you started to play.

My take is that you don't go home with a payout, assuming that you've ever even played out with real working players. That type of attitude has never worked for me. But otherwise, impressive post.

Sorry, didn't realize that you were the moderator when I posted that. No offense.

I don't post really as a mod. I just post my opinion. If I think it conflicts with a mod situation, I don't post it or I address it by PM.

You can say whatever you want, whenever you want to me, no offense is taken. We are just friends talking here.

And really my point was that my rhythm and fills might not be spot onto the original. I can usually do the song justice and
still belnd my own style. That tends to be more groove and emphasis. Usually very subtle things.

And yes, if you want to do Mustang Sally, I will do it and DO IT RIGHT.

I'm pretty much with the "be yourself" crowd if it's a cover band and not a tribute band. OTOH, "Comfortably Numb" is probably not a good song to take liberties with - the bass is pretty well defined on that song - the bass and drums have to create a trance on that or the effect is ruined.

Well, in case anyone was wondering... I did indeed get the gig. I spoke with the drummer and he agreed, improvising is ok so long as I nail all the major licks and don't step on the guitar solos. He also informed me that they have a show the first weekend in front of a booking agent they used to work with. The band has gone through a few changes recently and the agent wants to check us out before signing us to anymore gigs. I have approx 30 songs to get ready between now and then and also I need to find some cabs to complete my rig. Wish me luck!

I used to take liberties on the end of that song, by octave skipping the second measure, then walking passing notes on the last couple of measures. No complaints, and no compliments, because the focus of that part of the song is on the lead guitarist anyway. I figured no harm no foul.

That said, I played the song note for note until that end bit, for the very reason you said!

Thanks for the congrats. I hope it goes well!

What's in your rig now? What kind of cabs are you interested in?[/QUOTE]

After reading up on the stickies I think I'm going to go with 4 1x12's. My reasoning is that I want a rig that will fit into the back of my car. I want flexibility to play gigs from small bars to outside events without PA support. The Carvin b1500 I bought will run 4 8ohm cabs. Also I don't want to break my back... I'd rather lug 4 light cabs than 1 beast. So that being said I'm looking at avatars. They seem to have a pretty good rep on the boards as good sound for the money.

Any thoughts on my plan? Any idea the lead time Avatar's lead times? I may end up picking something up from a local store to get me up and running....

You might also look at Lopoline cabs. I've got a few of them and love them - killer cabs for the money.

These are 2 custom 1x12's that I use constantly -

I would never ever go into an audition and try to play any other way than the way I would play at a gig. Trying to disguise every distinguishing characteristic of your playing style seems like a weak way to get the gig. Imagine your bass idols going into an audition... do you think they would wuss out and try to play it safe, or would they just go in and own it?

This was also one of the songs we did. I did a good amount of playing during the solo and I think I may have stepped on the guitar a little and probably deserved the look I got for it.

But with everything else I think those who suggest that I don't want the spot if they demand I stick strictly to the recording are right. Thanks for helping me put it in perspective!

It's hard to resist the urge to add a little something the bass line during the solo of that song...
