Late 70s Ampeg . . . PLEASE HELP!

The 2-Pro can be got for less than €1900 from thomann.de and musicstore.com. That's between 1200 + 1300 sterling. It's the same here in Ireland with over the top prices. Just buy from Germany. My bank balance prefers it. Also if I buy from a retail store here I get 1 year warranty. If I buy from musicstore or thomann I get a 3 year warranty.

What do you think of that SVT-2 anyway? Even the big Ampeg dealers around here don't carry it in stock. I heard they were going to stop making it.

I know it doesn't have all the same preamp tubes as the SVT-CL, but how does it sound in comparison?

I don't have one. The reason I gave the 2-Pro as an example was I just checked thomann's price. It'll take me a while to save up for it.The last time I used one was a long time ago and my memory is not the best. I take chances with Ampeg since I've never used one of their products that I've not liked I'm just after ordering the SVP-CL ( nearly the same preamp as in the first channel of SVT-VR ) I still have to decide if I'll pickup a secondhand SVT 2 nonpro or buy the 2 pro to use as the poweramp. A lot of people on this forum say that the non pro is better. The pro has so much protection that it can be temperamental where as the non pro just gets on with the job. One of the main problems with the pro is using it in a rack that stops hot air from flowing out from the left side of the head.

Sorry I can't be of any help. Nobody less than 150 miles from me sells them. How did you hear they were going to stop making them. Would this mean a new rackmount Ampeg head with one channel preamp from SVT-VR and tube poweramp with no protection is possible

That's subjective. (Or is it? )

Depends on which one you like more after plugging into each one.

I can say with confidence that they'll sound a lot different. Especially channel one.

If i was to buy anything like that from outside the UK, i'd get hit with 4-5% import tax on the unit and the shipping, then id have to pay 17.5% VAT on the import tax, unit and shipping

£1200
+£60 (import tax)
+£210 VAT on unit
+£10.50 VAT on import tax
+£15 "clearance fee"

And thats not including shipping at all, which, god only knows how much that would be, but thats just shy of adding £300 onto a £1200 retail, and remember the import tax and vat would be added to the shipping aswell, so, ok, its a bit less than £2000, but still not that good
