Late 80's Stingray 5 vs 2005 Stingray 5

I have the opportunity to buy either a late 80's maybe early 90's stingray 5 for about $1,100 or a 2005 Stingray 5 for $950. I want to know if there is a big difference between the two. I have seen some threads that claim the older 5 stings have more of that classic growling MM sound that the basses are famous for. Both of the items have to be shipped so I do not have the chance to play them. I know they are both great basses, but is it worth the extra $150 for an older model? Both are single humbucker. I would love to hear from people who have had the chance to play both. Thanks.
