So I'm in the middle of a rebuild of a 90's peavey foundation that I won in an auction a few months back. The body was pretty beat up and one of the pickups was dead. I decided to strip the body and try my hand at a refinish job, which is currently under way.
I considered a few options for the pickup replacement, and ultimately ended up going with a mudbucker style neck pickup. I'll use the functioning original super ferrite pickup in the bridge position. My initial plan was to just enlarge the stock neck pickup position to fit the wider pickup, but the stock cavity is too wide and there would be gaps above and below the pickup. So the current plan is to plug the stock cavity and rout in a new cavity to the correct size.
So once the body is plugged I can locate the new cavity for the mudbucker anywhere I want. I don't currently have an sg style bass, so nothing for me to reference. Also, I believe most sg basses are short scale, where my instrument will be standard 34" scale.
I'm hoping you all can give me some recommendations for laying out the cavity in the neck position. I did a quick google search which yielded the expected AI garbage pile. I'm hoping some of you experienced builders can send me in the right direction for this build.
