LDS 15/6 Question

I'm surprised a spray-on coating costs more than tolex covering. Is it the cost of the coating material itself, or is the application a fairly labor-intensive process? Is that spray-on stuff a nasty material to work with?

As I understand, the spray-on coating requires an investment of thousands of dollars in specialized equipment in order to do the job safely and effectively. This investment implies the requirement of an economy of scale in order to perform each individual job at a cost that is actually affordable for the customer.

And yes, the spray coating is indeed nasty stuff. For one thing it's highly toxic, and if applied improperly, can easily get into one's lungs - coating the inside of the lungs with a poisonous residue that immediately hardens in the lungs and cannot be dislodged. Very nasty indeed.

Regarding the crossover:

Don uses three different crossovers for the fEarful style cabs.
1- Passinwind's old crossover in the wiki as the basis, ~700hz 3rd order up 2nd order down

2- Ralf's designed 800hz "ruler flat" crossover, I believe 3rd order down and up, but not sure

3- Don and Ralf's favorite, the 1200hz crossover with I believe some kind of zobel or something to correct for the peaks at that frequency with the 3015LF.

I believe they will make a custom one based on Greenboy's designs as well, which is IMHO the best way to go, as it takes into account the best dispersion and driver safety and all that.

As far as I know, there is no "standard" LDS design. Don is a 100% custom builder - meaning that you can order your cab in nearly any configuration and dimensions that your little heart desires - within the realm of practical physics. And as long as you're willing to take responsibility for the final product - if you should happen to overrule Don's warnings in case he feels the design is a bad one. :hmm:

Yep, thanks, I get that. I have been corresponding with Don and am inclined to just go with his suggestions regarding the crossover and other issues. I certainly don't know enough to even begin to think about "overruling" Don's judgment on any of this stuff! I was just hoping to get some additional input/opinions on the pros and cons of the different approaches to the crossover (or other relevant design issues).

Thanks very much -- exactly what I was looking for.

Don is about to start my 15/6 next week.
Just wanted to make sure the cloth grill is a good option.
I presume it is not causing any problems for you?
actually , the first time i used the cab , i did notice a farting sound :ninja: ...
turns out , the grille cloth frame was flapping against the cab body .

easy fix .
i ran a strip of 1/4" foam tape around the inside lip of the cab ,
made sure it was a snug fit ,
put the grille back on , and it's been perfect since then !!

you might ask Don to do this simple fix BEFORE he ships the cab , but as i said ,
it was an easy fix , even for an old guy like me ...

the grille frame itself is held on by eight heavy duty velcro strips ,
and has never come loose or caused any problems .

also , it's a very heavy duty cloth material ...

:D

The grill cloth can be problematic. With the 15/6 I had, the cloth vibrated off the speaker at high volumes causing a somewhat distorted sound. Don's recommendation was to put a bead of silicon around the frame, but unfortunately alot of that bled thru leaving a visible line.

Cheers mate.

I really like the old school look of the cloth...but read in a few places that it may flop from the air pressure. So I will bring this up with Don to be sure.

I think yours is not the tall version, cause the tall one doesn't allow a rack to sit on top so nicely I'm sure. That's my dilemma regarding size. I don't want my rack hanging over the sides...and I am not too fond of having my rack stand on it's end while playing.

I have another LDS cab I bought used off of CL (12/5)....and it's a little too narrow as well. My plan was to stack the 12/5 on the 15/6, with the rack on top....but even turning the 12/5 around it is only 19". I need 21" for the rack.

What does everyone think of sandwiching the rack between the two cabs with the 12/5 sitting on top? Is it gonna be goofy or what?

I will probably get another LDS 15 later the same size as the 15/6...and then sell the 12/5 or use it for backup/practice.

Much ado about nothing. The fEarful 15/6 is 20.5" wide before corners are put on, 21" wide with corners. Of several types of racks I have around here not one of them looks out of place on that width. Of course my original SKB does have a couple of protuberances further up its sides that stick out maybe 1/4" total beyond 21" but it's visually not even noticeable. I don't expect people whose ears stick out further than their necks to fatten up their necks or wear a neck brace, so I see no issue with this either ; }

Here's a cab that's only 18.75" wide with that SKB on top. Even that is visually no big deal unless you are focusing on all the wrong things.

As for sticking a rack between two enclosures, because of driver spacing and wavelength that does cause cancellation at some frequencies that wouldn't otherwise be there, but if it works for you and you don't hear the loss, do it.

My LDS 15/6 showed up today! Check it out:

And would any LDS 15/6 owners like to share the weight of their cabs?

The original LDS spray on covering (VERY tough... a little rough) is an upcharge because it is outsourced. GREAT finish!

Don has a new, in-house roll-on covering option that is no additional cost. I have not seen it yet... it is similar to the Schroeder finish from what I understand.

And...to the OP, there is no 'LDS' design (as mentioned above). Don is a pure custom shop, and does not market a 'fixed' 15/6 design. He will build what you want.

I had the honor of playing through RPSANDS LDS 15/6 prior to shipping, and EVERYTHING about it was killer... I would go a little taller and thinner like his... easy to Schlepp, and a little higher off the ground. I believe the specs were very close to the 'Greenboy' design. IMO and IME.

Depending on the options (finish, grill type, hardware) I think the LDS 15/6's have ranged from the mid 40 pounds to the low 50 pounds.

It seems unrealistic that I will have time to build one of these in the near future which begs the question, what to sell in order to order from LDS!

Don't think I've read anything but praises regarding the 15/6 design, construction, or customer service; that's pretty strong
