Lead Sheet Repository

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a Bass Lead Sheet Repository. It could be separated by musical genres, Jazz, Rock, Country, etc…or just song titles.

Think of what we could create.

I got a call last Friday morning to play a gig that night, mostly classic rock, which is what I do, but a few older tunes as well. Great example would be “Chain of Fools”, Not a hard song to play or remember, unless you also need to remember 25 other “new” songs.

There will never be a standard way to make a lead sheet, so forget about any sort of standardization. Whether you create the sheet in Word, Excel, or scan the scribbling you did on a bar napkin. Be it just the chord progression, verse, chorus, bridge or all the notes for that killer, and necessary run. For me, most songs I know from the radio, but just never learned to play. So notes are more important than progression, that and my ear is really bad (too much 8x10’s in my youth). Others may be just the opposite, great ear, but no feel for the song.

How does one properly “chart” a song. There must be a hundred ways to do it, but the old “whatever works best for you” would seem to take precedent. I am sure that once we actually started posting, within 6 months a handful of styles would take precedent.

As an example, I do mine in excel, I don’t need the whole damn song written out, though some might. I just want a reminder of that first note, the key and any changes, It might be a laugh to some of you, or not enough for others. I am open to ideas for a better mousetrap. I like something I can put on the floor and don’t have to turn the page every song.

I use Caps for the lowest notes i.e. an “E” mean open E string, an “e” means A string 7th fret, or D string 2nd fret. I can figure that out as I play. As most songs stay in these positions, if something higher up the neck is needed, then I should know it anyway. I also us the ~ as a flat.

I am willing to post what little I have. Is anyone else? I imagine our host would need to create a forum or something special for this, but it could be very, very useful. Or, If anyone knows of such a place now, that would be great. And am not talking about a note for note TAB site.
