Leafenbacker

Just a small bit of safety advise, next time you do this try the clamp on the other side of the drill-press table and let the piece of wood rest against the column, this way there will be less sideway forces on the clamp, most it has to do now is keep your work clamped downwards.

And more important, when doing it this way if something goes wrong and everything comes loose while drilling at least you yourself are out of harms way, the way you clamped it you will be the first object in the way of the piece wood that is coming around.

Thanks. That's easy to do. Perhaps I'll tackle that next.

I'm trying to keep down the weight, but chrome knobs may be an option. Do you know any sources for press-on chrome knobs? Or can I just use the set screw type and add a collar for the existing pots?

Thanks. I though about acorn or leaf knobs, but haven't found any.

This should also serve as my "hair pic", unless that's only needed for the first build thread :p

OK, on to disassembly and lots of sanding, and other assorted odds and ends. It's starting to get hot here in Phoenix, so I may have about an hour or two of sanding time before the temps hit the 90's.

Very nice mapleglo. Can't wait to see this finished. Now I'm off to the garage to work on my latest build too.

Thanks for the tip. I hadn't thought of that.

Thanks. I'll have to check in on your latest build thread.

You should be able to get press on chrome knobs from any Guitar Center, or online.

I'll definitely take a look for them. After looking at some of the pictures, there is a lot of chrome on this build, and chrome knobs may help tie everything together better.

I got about an hour or so of sanding time in this morning, but the temps are getting into the 90's already, so that's it for today.

Now that I see that, I totally agree about the chrome knobs. This is going to be about as nice a bass as I've ever seen, aesthetically speaking.

Thanks! So I stopped by Guitar Center and bought the last three chrome press on knobs they had.

I'll try each set, and see how they look, but I'm thinking that the chrome will look better as well.

At first I agreed w/Hopkins and chrome knobs (which still would work) but seeing how the wood ones match the inset on the body looks great.

It's been that hot here lately (CA - even the Bay Area!)- not normal for this time of year. Good pic of you also! ~R&R!~ How's the band going?

Both sets of knobs do work, so I'll have to try them both once I put on a few coats of the tung oil. That may or may not change things. I'm tending toward the chrome knobs because it's less work (still have to drill the inset on the bottom of the mahogany knobs), and the chrome knobs were pricey, at $10 each. It was one of those things - I was there, they had the knobs, and I was caught up in the moment. Probably could have had them cheaper on line. And of course, once I'm in a Guitar Center, I just can't buy one thing. Picked up a guitar stand as well. I was concerned that the cheap stands I have would eat into the finish on my Ric. They also had that new Precision on display, with the hand rubbed honey finish. I was close to buying that too, but my credit card is about to explode, so I held off…

Ah, the band. You know, I've been in this band for just a few months, and already we're thick in the drama. They got rid of the first drummer, who, by the way, I ran into at the Guitar Center today. Weird. We had our first gig last weekend, which I didn't think we were ready for, but it went off ok. A few mistakes here and there, but we recovered quickly. There's been an ongoing issue with our vocals. The previous drummer, current drummer, and I were quick to point this out. Of course the lead singer/rhythm guitarist is also the BL, and we practice at his house. Anyway, the new drummer said that the feedback from our gig was good, except for the vocals. So that set off the BL, who plans on canning him tomorrow at band practice. If that happens, I'll leave the band. The drummer has the best voice, and he is right - we really need to find a lead vocalist if we are to survive, I think.

So at the gig, during the break, the guy the venue hired to do the sound and lights comes up to me and says he really likes my playing, and he also runs a recording studio. They're looking for a bass player to lay down some tracks on their originals, and asks if I'd be interested. So we spoke the other day, and I'm going down there after work on Monday. They have some kind of country band recording that day, and the bass player doesn't always show up, so he said that if that happens again, I can sit in, and if the country guy likes my playing, they'll use me for the recording, and I'll get paid. So this totally worked out in my favor.

I guess all things happen for a reason.

Uh oh. Haven't posted any pics here yet. It's here on my facebook page though. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.204233926367358.1073741826.119889761468442&type=3

Love it! 12 strings, wow! That wish bass is pretty neat too.

Bands are hard. Like any relationship. Sometimes there's magic, other times endless issues. Life's short and at this point why add more issues to ones already complicated world. But as you said, it looks like it lead to better opportunities. Good luck w/that! (playing w/a pick & palm muting is a great country bass tone)

Yes, life is too short, especially at my age, for drama. Thanks for the vid. I may actually use my fingers for country. I'll see exactly what kind of sound they're looking for.

I got tired of practicing, so I took a break and started my truss rod cover. I have to flatten that bottom area, and thin the entire piece, but it's a start.

Or magnets.

Hadn't thought about a magnet, though I'd have the leave the cover a bit thicker I'd imagine.

Have you thought about using a Rick style truss rod cover instead of the leaf? Or will the modified headstock not allow for it?

I suppose I could adjust the Ric style truss rod cover to fit, but the standard size and shape would not fit at all. Do you think the leaf is a bit much, or doesn't fit aesthetically?

I think it's a little too much. There's already a lot going on with the bass texturally and it draws the eye away from the body. Of course the continuation of the leaf motif works but it just makes it a little too busy IMO.

+1... I don't think the leaf works at all - I would definitely go for something more simple, like a modified Ric type TRC...

I'm with the others. I like the leaf, but it's a bit much. Something very simple would be lovely. A darker piece of wood, in an organic shape, held on with a magnet would complement it nicely.
