Has anyone used this community? Learn Jazz Standards - The Ultimate Jazz Musician Resource

I've been listening to the podcast, and it's great. Seems for $29 a month you can join the community which works through one jazz standard a month (melody, harmony, soloing over etc). I like his approach, but just wondering if anyone has any experience, thoughts?

I could probably work through one a month, but with life etc. there's a strong chance it will be too much for me.

Yes, I'm a member and the site is top notch. In addition to the jazz standard of the month club there are lots of other jazz courses you'll have access to and new content is added regularly. Excellent value IMO.

You could buy a Real Book and find buddies to jam with locally. The old tried and proven method. PS....learn how to memorize tunes and play them in all 12 keys. It may take months to become ingrained, but it will happen.

The Jazz Standard of the Month is way more than opening up a Real Book and playing a chart. Each month's standard comes with a video and written harmonic analysis of the tune as well a video and audio of a solo etude. Included are also chord tone maps and backing tracks and other resource to help surround the tune harmonically. This month is "Softly as in a Morning Sunrise" and there is an approach note etude as well. All very professionally done.

All good. I got my analysis chops from community college with Woody Witt which worked out great. PS. learned to sit at a piano to analyze lead sheet. Now its second nature and do it sight reading with no instrument.

I ended up signing up to this course, and it's brilliant. Especially for understanding jazz harmony. Loving it.

question...how far along in music do you have to be in order to absorb these lessons?

is this senior level stuff not suitable for a freshman?

Just signed up for free song charts and bought “The Jazz Standards Playbook.”

I tried it for a month. Great printed material, small lessons to refer to if a concept is foreign to you, and as noted above, etudes to focus on different approaches to playing through the changes. I did the jazz standard study for a month and learned a lot. My only negative is that it is very oriented to soloing over chord changes, which I am not advanced enough to attempt. however even the simple practice of running the different arpeggios over the changes was a great learning opportunity. I didn’t have time to try their bass-specific course(S) so can’t comment on that. If I played lots of jazz, I probably would have continued, but most of my playing is rock right now, so not as applicable. For someone playing jazz it would be super helpful, and everything appeared top notch including the online community and some feedback from the site creator himself.
