Double Bass Lefty Electric switching to Upright Righty

Hello friends!


So i've been a lefty electric bass player for a couple years now. I got into my college of choice in the music education program playing electric bass. My professor told me I need to learn double.

I've made the decision to relearn upright bass right handed.

Has anyone else accomplished this?

I'm in the process of trying to play the upright as a righty after several years of playing electric bass left handed. I rented a bass and have been at it for about two months. My right hand technique is fine. It's my left hand that's slowing me up. I need to develop greater strength in my fingers and work on intonation. But I guess that comes with time and practice. The good thing about becoming a righty is that you'll have a wider range of instruments to select from when looking to purchase. Lefties are really limited.

Any beginner on upright has to work on left hand form, strength and intonation, no matter where they're coming from... so you're not in a particularly worse place.

I've known quite a few very successful upright bassists who are left-handed but play right handed. They seem to pop up everywhere, but they just don't consider it a "handed" instrument. I think unless you're going to play in a section it's less of a deal, but you keep a lot of options open in terms of high quality older instruments should you ever get to that level (never doubt yourself!).
