Talk about a great topic...I still think that I'm a legend, only the lounges of the 70's are mostly gone.
The original article was not about the phenomenon of rock stars aging in general. It was really rather rhapsodic, rather than journalistic, on the ironies of aging metal stars specifically, and the contradictions of a musical persona built on being badass vs. the reality of having to limp offstage with a cane. A jazz or blues or folk musician can age much more "naturally" without such a sense of discordance between their music and their life. Some die in tragic accidents crushed under a bus or overdosing or in bed with a groupie, but for those that don't the frailties of old age seem particularly bitter.

I saw that tour at Shea Stadium, Queens NY. The Clash and David Johannsen were on the bill, and I think another band but I can't remember. An actual thunderstorm started during the intro of Love Reign O'er Me.

It'll be a really sad say when Lemmy calls it quits ... and I think that day's coming.
He's sure had a good run though, and a lifestyle that would have put most people in the grave decades ago.

Dimebag died on stage & he was never more popular.
I think Lemmy dying on stage would prove a helluva lot to his fans.
Like what? That he stuck it out even when he couldn't perform nearly as well as they loved him for? If that's what fans need I'm glad I don't have too many.
And Dimebag was not popular. His MEMORY was. And that too is just sad..... not cool.
Proving that the show must go on. Old bikers don't die, they ride off into the sunset. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

There won't be any more bands at the level of any of the great old rockers... I can't think of any band since the 1990's that has a die hard fanbase anything comparable to the likes of Iron Maiden, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, ect, ect, ect....
Content has increased and attention spans have decreased. Everything has become homogenized and nothing is as interesting.
Umm. Alice Cooper is out and touring. He was on the road with Marilyn Manson a couple years back, and he was still wearing makeup and playing with snakes... And sounding great. He's now back with another new project, Hollywood Vampires. I don't think his golfing persona provides the example of a retired rocker you are looking for.

To state the obvious, the way Lemmy lives his life it's amazing he's alive. I'm 44 and made the choice to quit drinking 3.5 years ago, and have lost 90 lbs. in the last year. I want to live a long time. Nothing worse than feeling like doggy doo every day of your life. I couldn't imagine feeling that way at 69.
Being young, dumb and full of rum is okay when your 25. Being old, dumb and full of disease is not a good idea at 69.

I'm making a point. And yes too a degree I'm boasting. Life comes down to choices. You can choose to live like a gluttonous fool, and pay the consequences at an age of 69 like Lemmy is doing or live it clean and take care of yourself. I may drop dead tomorrow, but at least I'm not purposely killing myself anymore.
Plus, in no way do I see my previous post as a complaint. Not sure how you did. I guess if sharing pride in one's accomplishments is boasting then I am. Just as every NBD post is boasting to a degree.
I find it odd that you would make that comment anyway. Maybe you would understand if you used to be a 300 pound drunk, which I boastingly admit I no longer am.
