Lemmy Kilmister...

So he's just had his birthday? I didn't get my invite to the party but then I'd be the one slouching in the corner after the first 5 drinks! May he go on for a long time yet as the world needs rebels. Mind you Ozzy has about 32 lives. He had that bad accident on the quad bike and came through it. There were loads of jokes going around about not being able to find a sample of blood in his body, only alcohol, etc etc. Rock on Oz. His voice was so right for Sabbath in its day and he still loves performing now.

I saw Motorhead the first time at the Ipswich Gaumont in 1984 while I was stationed at RAF Bentwaters during my Air Force days. Pure hard rock bliss! This was also the show that made me seriously consider wearing earplugs for the first time. My ears rang for THREE DAYS! Which is something, since I work on jets for a day job.
I got to meet Lemmy in 1996 in Atlanta just before a show at the Masquerade. He was definitely living the rock and roll lifestyle (two strippers for company), but really a nice guy.
I read an interview with him once where he said he considers himself more of a rhythm guitarist than a bassist. He's still one of my favorite influences, though.

Good 'ol Lemmy!!! He truly is one of a kind, and the truth is, he started off playing rhythm guitar way back when, and it was only when he hooked up with Hawkwind that he got abass thrust into his hands, he was less than thrilled at first but eventually took to it . See this vid of Lemmy and Hawkwind back in the day:

He stayed with Hawkwind until 1975 when he got busted at the Canadian border for posession of amphetamines. He was then fired from the band, got back to England and formed Motorhead to get even with them.

THat's a great clip..... strange to see him ham-fisting it along at 100mph on a Gibbo instead of a Ric!

Funny thing is, every Friday AM there's a DJ here from England, and he does a bit called "the brit hit that missed" with a song that was huge in England but got nowhere in the US-- you win stuff by guessing the title and band (have to get both)-- last week was Hawkwind's Silver Machine:hyper: Lemmy sang that one, too;)

He told quite a bit on the air how he had a teenage crush on Anastasia the dancer.... I was too late bu about ten seconds, but I did remind him Lemmy was in the band after he said on the air that he couldn't remember the bassist's name....

He's also a biy of a walking miracle. Both he and Ozzy have lived the hard rock life and Lemmy is still looking marvellous. Ozzy is having somewhat of a revival over here and so he should, he was another true great. Something in the voices as well as the playing in both these groups that makes them timeless.
i should say so, too. there are a lot of stoners in nottingham(well, a lot that i know) and they all love Ozzy. Metallica and maiden are more respected here, though. and we are NOT a city of bloody gun slingers!

I think he's a pretty good bass player. His intro to Ace of Spades kind of has this tricky groove that's ALMOST funky. When that dude on the "Supergroup" show played it, it sounded like even 8th notes. Also liked the breakdown in the Probot song.

The drummer and the guitarist in my band are brothers.

Rumour has it that back before they came along, before settling down and middle-aged spread, in the crazy days of the 1970s, their mother once did the horizontal tango with a crazy as f**k bassist by the name of Lemmy. I have no way to prove this one way or the other, but I want to believe.

On a similar tack, we used to practice in a studio call Backstreet, in Holloway, North London. It has sadly now shut its doors. Chris, the owner, was one of those old soldiers of the music world and, many moons ago, was a roadie for Hawkwind. One night Lemmy came off stage, thrust a bass into his hands, and told him to 'get rid of it'. He still has it to this day, though he has since deftretted it. I offered him everything bar my sister to have a go on it but to no avail.

Lemmy, I think it's fair to say, rules.

lemmy didnt play guitar in hawkwind he went to replace huw lloyd langton who had a bad trip n disapeared in smoke!! he started with a fender bodied thing...hernadez or some thing!!that was left in the van as he was a guitarest so didnt own a bass....then he went to gibsons thunderbird, wich he still owns also had sg wich u can see on silver machine video, but he found the necks to wide and found rics a narrower neck.....just think if he found tbirds comfey he still be using it today...he likes fenders too!
