I finally got off my duff and took the 1967 Johan Rauner 3/4 DB to Lemur Music for a new bridge, soundpost, and set-up. The results were absolutely amazing as it is completely transformed. When pushed, the notes shoot out like shotgun blasts, but it can moan and whine with a gentler touch. It articulates very clearly; each note is well defined, and the balance between strings is perfect allowing each of them to be heard clearly and not get drowned out by the other strings. The intonation is really good, making it quite easy as I no longer have to compensate. The whole bass now resonates more, not just sonically, but physically, I can feel the body vibrate much more intensely. The old bridge due to it being soft and too thin along with an incorrect sound post was really absorbing and killing off the string energy and the volume/tone. There are harmonics and overtones now, that were inaudible before, making for really rich deep and complex tones from each note played.
The people at Lemur were very nice, patient, and I got the bass back 24 hours later, which was unexpected. With Jon Peterson gone, there are very few resources in my area, Lemur is the closest at 22 miles away. I am happy to report good results and can recommend them. Moreover, it is wonderful to have such a great resource that is not out of county and does not require $100 of gas to get to!
